*I've read the rules, i'm not asking folk to value the gear for me (it' not the contents of my camera bag listed in my profile either), just to give me an idea of how best to obtain a respectable valuation!! :cuckoo:

i've been asked to sell a camera with 1 lens by a friend, it's not modern, it's not too common (according to ebay and this very forums own for sale section) and i know sod all about it!! :bang:

can people recommend good ways of getting a valuation?

Regards
Charlie

*I hope this is within the rules. If not maybe could a mod explain how to (within the rules) how best to ask the question????

i have trawled ebay with very little success

Do a search on here with the items names.
Do a search on FeeBay with the items names.
Do a search on Google with the items names.
Not much else you CAN do really!

If it's a Minolta or Sony item (or a third party lens that fits the Minolta/Sony AF mount), ask on dyxum in the external sales section.

done here google and ebay, even stupidly had a look on bumtree.

hmm, was more hoping a suggestion of a good retailer, be it online or in-store you could send to/go to and get a decent valuation.

LCE cheltenham told me they didn't see a market for my product in the area, therefore weren't interested in it!

If you could just put the make of the article, without the model number,I don't hink the mods would jump on you ? it would give the guys on here a chance to direct you somewhere?

PS.at the end of the day,if it's a friend just put you're value on it,and see if he agrees?

Did you search "completed listings" on Ebay?

That will allow you to average out a price for your gear.

You will have to find ways to make the best use of completed listings on ebay. You can search for camera and lens separately to make task easier. Also based on lens specifications and brand you should be able to make a fairly good guestimate (you will just have to look through a load of completed listings for [CAMERA BRAND] [focal length] [aperture] or similar searches. Don't forget wildcards!). If it is Leica, Nikon, or Zeiss, Canon EF, or fast like f/1.2 it is probably worth something. Some other gear may only fetch a few pounds, and most will go towards fleaby fees. Dealers are far worse, be warned!

There's a great 'old-fashioned' camera retailer and second-hand dealer in Hereford, Charlie. It's called Melgray , tel. 01432 272655. They've got some nice old equipment for sale in their cabinets and I asked them for a valuation on a second hand lens of mine (not very old though) I seem to remember, when I was buying a monopod from them. Good service from real experts! Best of luck, Dom
