hey everyone,

can anyone recommend a good place to get my nikkor 28-100 lens fixed. The three mounting points have all snapped. I heard calumet do it but I checked the web and cant find a mention of this service.

I need the lens for next monday!!

I could probably fix it myself if I had the parts. It looks like you have to unscrew the ring with the three 'teeth' on then put a new one on.

Any help much appreciated.

head on down to Stoke on Trent, Lehmann's is a national service centre [and used by Jessops et al...]

They're busy, though. You'll be lucky to get it back within a week. Maybe rent a lens from Calumet [There's a rental store on the Liverpool docks] for a day if it's a critical assignment?

I agree with Dan that you'll be lucky to get it back in time.

I don't agree with Dan about hiring from Calumet. Their Liverpool and Manchester branches don't have much stock, according to their on-line brochure, and ... oh, you don't want me to list 20 reasons why hiring from Calumet is a bad idea. (But then I am biased.)

One thing though ... if you do decide to hire a replacement, I doubt very much you'll be able to get an exact replacement. The Nikon 28-100 is sub-£200 and it's very difficult for hire shops to make money on that sort of lens. You'd probably be better off looking for an 18-200 VR or something like that.

actually, i'm not so sure aout Calumet, too - thought it was a 28-70 you were talking about [i.e one of the expensive 2.8's].. anyway, still a recommendation for Lehmann's - it's an official Nikon/Canon service centre, and most northwest UK warranty repairs go there - as a result it's rather busy.. [and I believe the owner went to school with my dad, not that it gives me any biased interests here - just something my dad mentioned once...]

If it's a reasonably inexpensive lens, then maybe bite the bullet and purchase a new one for your assignment? For example, a 50mm f/1.8 prime is way sharper than your zoom, and even at full retail's only £80 - which you could make back almost in full by selling the following week? [BTW, I'll bet that once you've shot with it, you won't sell it!...]
