Ive got the Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 G AF-S ED which i bought for landscapes etc, but to honest i very rarely use it and find myself using my Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 G AF-S ED 90% of the time.
Problem i have is that i have a very good collection of Lee Filters and to upgrade them to fit the 14-24mm will cost a fortune.

The question im asking is, if i sold the 14-24mm, what lens would you recommend for landscapes etc that is just as sharp as the 14-24mm?

Ive just bought of here a 16-35 f/4. I did think about spending the extra and getting the 14-24, but the lack of filters was too much of a con for me, as I want to use it with my polariser and 9 stop ND. The 16-35 has a 77mm filter thread, so if you have any other Nikon pro glass with filters, you should be good to go.

The 16-35 gets very good reviews, better sometimes than the 17-35 f/2.8 it replaced. Obviously you loose a stop, but it has VR, and who shoots landscapes at f/2.8 anyway?

An other option might be a 20mm prime?

There is a video on youtube comparing the 17-35 and the 16-35 and the 16-35 is quite noticibly sharper in the corners than the 17-35 which looks very mushy.

Have you thought about the 24mm PC-E you can left shift and right shift and stich the 2 images together to give you 20mp panorams with a similar field of view to the 14-24mm. I have the 14-24 and the 24mm PC-E and the 24mm is as sharp as the 14-24. The 24mm PC-E also gives you the benifit of tilting and takes 77mm filters.

Or you could have a look at pixel-peep.com - just input the lens in question & camera details etc

16-35f4 vr I bought one in January in preference to the 14-242.8. It is great for landscapes and indoor shots in low light if you can,t use flash. It should work well on your D700. There is a group on Flickr for the pairing of 16-35 and D700. Have a look at the pics on there to give you an idea what results you might get.

Thanks for all your comments guys ... will be spending the next couple of hours looking into the suggestions

The 16-35 f/4 is looking favourite at the moment, but wont rush into the decision like i did about getting the 14-24mm. Great lens, very sharp, but not practical or user friendly when it comes to filters.

There are several 16-35's on the bay at the moment. I was going to get one, but then lukilly one was listed here today that I snapped up!

Ive just seen them thanks Tom and keeping my eye on them. Would be great if someone wanted to do a swap or the other option is sell the 14-24 first :'( funds a bit tight at the moment !

I was hoping to trade my 105 macro for one, or sell it first, but I didnt want to miss out on the one on here, so the credit card is taking another battering until the 105 sells and I can pay the CC off again.

You shouldnt have trouble selling the 14-24 here or ebay.

Have you got the link for this video please?, I am also considering the 16-35mm. Thanks

Had you thought about the Tokina 16 - 28 2.8 ?
I've done quite a lot of research and it seems very well rated, sharp and beautifully put together - which TBH was the one thing that put me off the idea of a 16 - 35. No VR though - but wouldn't think that's an issue for LS...

Thanks for the link Tom, the picture comparisons were very interesting

Did you notice on the nikon 16-35mm f/4, it had a canon lens cap on it

I didnt spot that no

Has anyone had both, the 14-24mm and the 16-35mm? ... im wondering how the image quality compares, especially for sharpness. I understand the 16-35mm has a lot of distortion at 16mm, but can easily be corrected using photoshop, so thats not a problem for me.
So any help in me selling my 14-24mm to get the 16-35mm would be much appreciated

Stick the 14-24 in the for sale section I'm sure people will be interested, me included :D

The 14-24 will sell easily. It's a better lens than the 16-35 from what I have seen from personal experience. I recently sold mine as I wasn't using it enough but I regret not having it now. I may have to buy another one. The only thing that let's it down is the fact that there is a distinct lack of filters for it. I think Lee Filters do a kit with one filter in the kit for about £250?

You won't regret the 16-35mm, I've had it 2 weeks and just love it. You admit that the 14-24 doesn't get used but you'll find the 16-35 is more versatile, bigger focal range, filters, lighter to carry around - you'll have more uses for it.

I know you want it for landscape but here's shot at 35mm f/5 1/40 ISO200 in fairly lowish light just to show you how useful it is with the VR, and how sharp it is.

Great photo and great example

The only reason the lens hasnt been used is because i cant justify the expense of buying yet another set of filters for this lens only, when ive built up a great set of 100x150 Lee filters. But overall, the 14-24mm is a fantastic lens. But ive been using my 24-70mm for landscapes and basically everything else, but i know deep down that this lens isnt for landscapes, so it looks like the 16-35mm will be the way to go. Especially as it has a 77mm filter, so my Lee filter adapter will fit that perfectly!

no selling outside the classifieds guys :)
