VLC will play anything but may not be the prettiest interface out there, it sure does what it says on the tin though, the lack of fancy skins and interfaces helps to keep the ammount of HDD space and RAM it consumes on your PC down.
Anybody suggesting Apple's bloatware as a general medial player needs their bumps felt. If you want pretty skins etc. and ability to manage files to a portable player (MP3 or, even and Ipod) then Winamp will do it for you or take a look here http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-12519_7-10104294-49.html I don't even use Itunes with my Ipod.
Not sure why Media Player isn't doing it though, I've been quite impressed with the latest version, have you tried downloading it and reinstalling again?
MediaMonkey for music
VLC for video.
They have never complained about Codecs.
The main reason I like MediaMonkey is that everything else I've tried dies trying to index 13363 tracks in my library
MM copes brilliantly and the auto-tagging and auto-organisation works a treat. It also allows me to synch and resample subsets of the library for my car's USB stick and my iPod.
