best media player?

hi all,
whats the best media player that will work on my laptop?
im running windows 7 but dont want itunes as i dont have an ipod?

it just doesnt like to repond to me for some odd reason, ive been trying to open it now for about an hour to listen to some songs but its not booting, neither is windows media centre:bang:

You really need to see why that is doing that, there is certainly a problem there.

I use WMP and media player classic if it can't play on WMP. :)

the only thing that ive found couldnt be opened with WMP (with the shark package) so far is a MOV encoded in apple intermediate codec which as far as i can tell is only viewable in final cut pro.

but yes id troubleshoot the WMP issues, check for WMP windows updates or repair it via add/remove would be my first suggestions.
 
Media Player Classic or VLC for me.

Its generally the odd HD format that I have trouble with. However I very rarely watch it so it doesn't bother me.
 
KmPlayer has lots of features, I use it for play back of my time-lapse video's although Quicktime pro is used for converting the images into video.
 
If media player does not work then that is the best way to leave it, another micro***** product.
Winamp all the way for me with the added bonus of shoutcast radio :D
 
VLC has always been a fav of mine. Download it and it'll play every media file under the sun... no messing around with having to download extra codecs etc :)
 
iTunes, I have used it for years, and only just got an iPod this xmas.
 
Another vote for iTunes here, you don't need an iPod to use it. It is just a case of finding one you get on with.
 
winamp for audio or media player classic for videos

other alternatives when they don't work would be foobar2000 and vlc imho :)
 
Used to think I would never go past Realplayer.

Have winamp and itunes but have found the sound from the latest WMP is far better than them all.
 
I use iTunes and love it. You dont need an iPod to use it. I find the search very good and quick. Great overall control.
 
I've used them all over the years and have settled on two:

VLC for movies
MediaMonkey for music & internet radio

Both excellent products :)
 
I like videolan for video, when using it to play an audio playlist in the office it leaked memory like sieve though and crashed the computer it was running on after about three days . We had to go back to WMP for stability (!) This was a year or two back, it's probably fixed by now.
 
I hate when i click play on a few thousands songs just after ive installed VLC and i havnt set up the file assosications correctly.. and it opens thousands of players rather than adding to 1 play list!
 
You obviously have some issue with the WMP on Windows 7. I was amazed by how good it is (compared to the version in XP).
Also, I have a simple PCI TV Card in my 'pooter, and Windows Media Centre is bitc***gly good.
I'm as much a MS sceptic as everyone else (die-hard Firefox user, Skype over Windows Live anyday, etc, etc) but Win 7 Media Centre is superb.

Get it working, you won't regret it

im running a W7 blu-ray enabled HTPC and i agree 100%. running arcsoft TMT plugin for blu-ray and the shark007 codec pack and its unstoppable.

sky player plugin, tunerfree mce for all the iplayer/4OD etc content.. loads of others worth a look too.
 
in short:
1) VLC as a general media player (or for video only)
2) Winamp if you have a few mp3 albums you would like to keep track of...
 
I prefer AIMP2 or Zinf over winamp for music, and use VLC, Media Player Classic and Kantaris for everything else.

It's all down to personal choice.
