Best macro for a Nikon D300

Help i need a macro lens, a while ago i had a Sigma 105mm macro but that was for a different camera. very impressed with the lens it self so i wouldnt rule it out getting one in a Nikon mount.

Basically can anyone give me some ideas for a macro lens that i can use to shoot bugs and butterflies with using natural light?

Also is VR, VC, OS necessary with out a tripod?
 
I use a 60mm AF-D, which is a quality optic but might be a bit short for what you want. Nikon does a 105mm but it's not cheap - about £400 I think.

Maybe have a look at the Sigma or the Tamron 90mm
 
I also use a 60f2.8 which is equivalent to 90mm on the crop sensor.

You might not get the level of magnification you require but you can use it handheld far easier than longer macros. VR helps without a tripod for lower shutter speeds and may come in handy if your moving around to try to capture stuff
 
I am using a Nikon 105 on my d300....very pleased with the results...it's not cheap though!

Amen to that! Loving my ancient AIS 105mm micro. Razor sharp and a synch to focus with.

That said, if it was mainly insects, I'd be tempted to go for something longer. I used to have a Sigma 180mm 3.5 and it was utterly superb though very big and heavy. The Sigma 150mm 2.8 is also well worth a look. Personally I'd rather spend a big chunk of money on either of these than the Nikon 105mm vr.
 
I have the 105mm d nikkor micro - brilliant lens. Coupled with tubes... :D

But working distance is a bit close (between 5cm and 10cm) which scares most insects.

I'd look to try out a 150mm sigma or a 180mm sigma.
If 105mm is around the right length, the 105mm nikkor (doesn't have to be vr) 105mm sigma or a tamron 90mm are the recommended (although I haven't tried the others).

Some shots from the 105mm are on the signature link, some with tubes some without.
 
Thanks for the replies so far sounds like the sigma 150 might be a good one to look at first. Any idea on second hand prices for it?

I'd budget £350 for the non OS version used. I paid £300 for my 180mm but would probably go for the 150mm if buying again, mainly because it's a more portable size for carrying around.
