Looking for something with more range and quality than my nikkor 55-200 f4 - 5.6 VR.

APS-C Nikon camera and want to try some bird / wildlife photography perhaps.

I checked on sites for advice and the lenses they were quoting were £8000 - £11000.

Is it possible to use sub £1000 lenses in the 400 / 500 / 600 mm ranges and get good results with birds in flight etc ?

Other options would be a 300/4 with or without 1.4x TC, or in the Canon world a 400/5.6.

Normally plenty of used copies around.

There's a relatively new Sigma 100-400 that someone might be able to report on.

If possible try and find somewhere with these lenses in stock so you can get a feel for the size and weight -- if you're not used to longer lenses...

I think the general consensus of opinion is the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary lens - bang on at the price, around £750 new and a cracking lens. You can fine tune via a USB Dock which is around £40 and also enables firmware updates too.
I used it on Canon APS-C bodies as do many others and you get great results and well within budget.

Well if you can afford a used one the 300mm f/4 PF is really nice.

Otherwise there is the sigma/tamron 150-600mm mentioned above.

That's guys. Will start to research the suggested options.

If your ok with the size and weight of the 150-600s then the Sigma contemporary would be a good choice,if you want lighter then the Sigma 100-400 is a good alternative, remember though most folk want longer when they get into wildlife.
