hi every one this is my first post i am off to see f1 at silverstone in july just wondering what every one think's will be the best lens for this i am looking to buy second hand or new if at a reasonable price cheers

You need to tell us your budget, no point recommending a £3000 lens if you have £300

Last year I used a 200mm with a 2x TC on a APS-H sized sensor which worked pretty well, effectively giving me a 520mm focal length (I think) on a full sized sensor.

for £400 the 70-300 canon lens.
if you double it (maybe a little more) you'd get a secondhand 100-400L.

Never been there but Silverstone is known for being a poor circuit for photography because of high fences and big run offs that mean the spectator areas are a long way from the track.

Have a look at the sigma 100-300 f/4 it's an amazing lens :)

Here's some samples from it on my Canon 1D MKII

Just for something to gauge off, The jump shot was at around 100mph, I had about a second to focus on the car before it launched over the jump.. They were coming up a big hill so the lens did a good job :)

i have just been down to comet today and they were selling off a tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 for 70 pound so i thought i would snatch it up for that great price . does any one think this lens will be ok i am only a amateur photographer

Something like that'll be fine to start then eventually as you get better you can progress to the sharper, more expensive f/4 or f/2.8 lenses.

I go that with as a kit lens and didn't get on with it. As I knew next to nothing about camera's I didn't know if it was me or the lens. I bought the Canon 70-300 IS USM and am 99.9% sure it wasn't me the difference is amazing :D

That lens should be fine, 300mm is a minimum as Silverstone, some of the spectator areas are absolutely miles from the track.
