Hi, Hope that those among you that shoot a lot of motorsport can help me.

On Saturday I have a Rally day and hubby has been tasked with taking the photos

I guess I just wonder what the best lens would be for him to use as I don't want him to have to change them over. So ............. kit lens, nifty fifty or 55-250mm zoom?

Hope you can give me the benefit of your experience so that I have maybe one photo that is OK!!!!

Depends how close to the action you are but judging by general rallys I'd say you'd need the 55-200.

Take them all though you may get to use all of them.

I'd take the 55-250mm, from what I recall about the rallies I once did they can be very dusty. Change lenses in the middle of that and you'll need a 'Dyson' to clean the camera out afterwards.

The 55-250 deffinately would be the one to chose, generally speaking thats the focal length range I would use. I do use sometimes longer and sometimes shorter but most corners could be covered by 55-250.

don't stand on the outside of any bends

The 55-250 out of them, but if you're looking to buy a new lens for motorsport; either a Canon/Nikon (depending on what camera you have) 70-200 f2.8, or the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 can't be beaten for under £2,000.

All depends on location and availablity of how close you can get to the action.

One of my favoured lenses is my f2.8 28mm which i use quite often.

Will be going to a rally next weekend and will be taking my 28mm and my 18-105 sigma. Lending my 70-200 to someone else for the weekend as I find it's too tempting to zoom in too close alot of the time and miss alot of what's going on.

don't stand on the outside of any bends

Can be just as dangerous on the inside.

Never ever turn your back to an oncoming vehicle.

Clean underpants needed in those vids

Depends on how far away you are from the action I suppose. I was using a 100-400 at Castle Coombe yesterday and the pro tog had a 600mm (and better locations).

Other times, say Prescott hillclimb, you're so close you need something around 30mm

Well, judging by the weather and rain here, I shall be lucky to get any half decent shots at all :'(

Rain makes for awesome photos, look out for puddles which the cars will splash up and the general spray that comes off the wheels produces a lot more dramatic shots than a dry day!
