I will be heading out to New York for a long weekend some time in February. I am looking for advice on the best lens to couple with my Canon 550d to take on the trip. I bought the 550d kit which included a canon EFS 18-55 and a Tamron AF 70-300 lens. I am tempted to buy an 18-200 lens to give me the flexibility without having to carry too much kit with me!?!? Any suggestions would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

When I last visited New York my most used lens was my 10-22mm canon.
Fantastic for capturing the huge buildings!

Take a trip to B&H photo also. What a store.

Seconded, UWA such as the 10-22, especially as you have the mid-long range already covered.

thirded ... go wide rather than longer... everything is close in NYC

Definitely wide, and definitely a telephoto for picking out buildings at distance to negate perspective distortion.
I was there in June and had my 12-24mm (most used walking around) my 70-300mm Sigma (now gone) which in the end I only used for the Red Bull air race on at the time.
Also took my 35mm f/1.8 which was good for walking around at night, although I could have probably got away with my 105mm f/2.5 AIS in places like Times Square.
Long lenses are always good for people spotting without getting noticed.

I know you will probably want to travel light so try and get a compromise :) The 2 lenses you have would be fine in general use there although I think you will be wanting more reach than your kit lens offers.

Thank you all for the comments and suggestions. Given my limited budget at present, and my desire to stay away from the divorce courts  I think a 10-22 will have to wait:( I could probably push to buying 50mm 1.8 but doubt this would make much difference over the 18-55?

I have had a mooch on fleabay and found these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/58MM-WIDEANGL...es_CameraLensesFilters_JN&hash=item5ade1e00cb would it be worth taking a chance on one? Obviously I would buy one suitable for the 550d ;)

Any further advice or suggestions most welcomed! :help:

Happy New Year BTW:wave:

To be honest I had my 35mm f1.8 and only used it on a few occasions, such as in dim restaurants but I was there in the summer

Why not just hire the wide angle for the trip?

I hired a 10-22 when I went to Paris, great lens, and it only cost me 30 if I remember right.

I agree with all the comments around the wider the better. I was in NYC this time last year and took my 24-105 but found it not wide enough, so ended up visiting B&H (great store!!) and buying a Tokina 12-24 which then stayed on my camera for the rest of the trip!
