Best Laptop for Photo Editing?

Hi Guys,

I have a ell Laptop (with an Intel i3 processor). had it about a year. I was recently working on some Panorama shots in Elements 9 and all of a sudden, the laptop is knackered (which i'm guessing was due to the size of the files as I was in a cottage in the Highlands with no internet so it cant have been a virus).

So, now i'm left with a laptop that freezes everytime I try and access any of my photos or other files (meaning I have to restart the laptop).

So, i've decided to get a new laptop and pass my old one to the wife so she can get it fixed etc.

Just one question, what laptop would you recommend for photography? My budget is around £700-800. I'm guessing I should try and get a better processor (ie the i7) but any thoughts/ideas?

I'll mainly be using ot for working on images and internet. Any advice welcome as I'll be getting it this lunchtime.

i7-2630QM, full HD screen, a 7200 rpm disk and as much memory as you can afford. Dell do one for that sort of price (configure one of the 15" XPS machines and don't forget to add any appropriate voucher code), as do Asus (N53SN). The Asus is difficult to get hold of though and a quick google shows that this weeks Dell discount codes aren't brilliant (they were offering 15% off, now it's only £79).

Acer do a cheaper one without a full HD screen at around £600.
 
If you are making panoramas then I would suggest you get plenty of memory as this process can be memory hungry.
 
Depends what your after, for info: spec wise I am using an 8510w HP machine which is a couple of years old now - but rattles through photoshop and LR with releative ease.

Spec is: 2.4ghz (dual core), 8Gn Ram, 512Mb Video and a 7200rpm disk - which runs win 764bit and PS / LR 64bit versions.

Never really found it a slouch..

i thought that of my quad 2.83 until i got a 5Dmk2 :gag:

im now an i7 convert :clap:
 
but what about laptops and the whole screen move contrast/brightness change element? Surely for editing you need to have a screen that in whatever position you put it will give you a true contrast/brightness level?

Are there laptops that get over this problem?
 
I use MacBook pro 13 inch one with 4gig ram and i7 processor. Working fine with my cs5, lightroom 3.

Not that I'm aware of, it's inherent in the design and some are better than others, cheap screens are awful and I wouldn't recommend a serious photographer only have a laptop at all. However I know that many photographers only have a laptop and find it fine.
 
i got a dell xps new from ebay, 17" screen, i7 8GB ram 500GB hdd, but spare internal slot.

Used it for picture and video editing and its been great, just no the most portibale of laptops
 
take time to set up the computer the best way for photoshop - remember to set up a scratch disc that is not the C: drive - and set the amount of RAM too... this simple steps can make a huge difference to how Photoshop performs...
 
What you should look for is a Laptop with a nice screen 1440x900 as minimun, at best 1920x1080.. Then you will not regret having at least 4GB RAM, 8 at best. the cpu, well, the faster the better, but it's not what's most important, as all cpu's today are plenty fast enough for photoshop. If you put in a SSD drive you will boost your performance drastically. You can the use a larger external drive for storage. Just an idea.
 
I have a Packard Bell with 6gb ram, i7 processor hd LED display and 750gb hdd cost £700 with photoshop elements built in runs cs5 smoothly
