I've been offered an original iPad 64gb 3g/wi-fi and before making any changes, I'd like to know what is the best iOS to put on it?

Should I automatically go with the latest version or is there one considered optimal for the original hardware?

I will use it for general web browsing, writing / reading MSOffice documents etc.

Thanks, Kevin

I use my iPad 1 for all the same as you list and more, I'm with the latest version and I can't think of any reason why I would need to go back to a previous version.

Another vote to just go with the latest.

And another one.

The thing isn't that old and it can handle everything in the iOS5.1.

The issues start to come when you put a very new iOS on a very old device. Well, very old in Apple terms ie a 2-3 years.

I think the original iPad will struggle with iOS6 in October if it is included in the compatible list.

To answer your question, go for with the latest.

Thanks for the replies; looks like I'll go with 5.1. Who knows, I might even grow to like it ;)

Kevin

I have that exact same model of iPad and am running the latest iOS with no issues.
In fact, the latest has sorted a few bugs such as random closing of Safari whihc was really annoying!

Recent iOS releases have had changes for the v2/3 iPads but these are just ignored/redundant in the v1 - it doesn't have a negative impact that I can see.
Go with the latest!

Thanks for the replies; I've put on 5.1 and it runs beautifully.

Will soon be looking for recommendations for some basic office tools but will start a new thread for that.
