Hi I have foolishly volunteered to help put together a website for our local parish council, quite happy with the design etc but they dont want to spend on web hosting at this time so I am looking for free web hosts anyone able to recommend one?

Thanks

Jd

Whilst there are free web hosts out there (although I can't name any) putting 'best' and 'free' with 'web host' just doesn't work well. A reasonable host is very cheap so I'd suggest you try to persuade them otherwise. A paid host is also much more likely to allow a wordpress/joomla installation, which will make life much easier too!

With no money in the budget the parish council cant afford to pay it the approval process isnt 2 minutes as with all local government so lets say free and useable to asses interest in moving to this as a communication method

Joomla and wordpress wont make it easier for me it will be a dreamwaver site I have the software and skill to do that hence it all being a nill cost project :)

If they are looking to use it as a communication then I'd think again about finding some way to support wordpress. Having the wordpress back end will make it much easier for people that aren't you to make simple changes!!

I've used 000webhost for a number of years for either building test websites or for very low budget sites.
The downside with them is that they are quite agressive with unused sites, e.g. if not enough people visit (or you logging in) then you get popup ads, if you get very few hits then they see the website as no longer being used and will delete it to save their server space (they claim to give you advanced warning but I haven't always found this to be true!).

So there is free hosting out there but I would now be seriously tempted by the £15/year mentioned above (TSOHost is regularly recommended on these forums). Free hosting is invariably more hassle for you so I'd ask yourself whether it'll cost you £15 worth of your time and effort.

fast hosting direct - http://www.fasthostingdirect.co.uk/ - £20 a year unlimited hosting, complete with domain name

Forget dreamweaver, use joomla or wordpress for an easy website with content thats easy for others apart from you to administer, wordpress being the easiest.
There are free or cheap templates that will ready make the website for you, depending on needs.

Hi thanks for the replies going to give squidhost a try and see what it makes of dreamweaver
