Hi all

I'm sure this question has been asked several times before but couldnt find it in the search.

I've just taken my first batch of RAW images and before I splash out on a decent converter I was wondering if anyone knows of any free versions that are worth playing with?

From what Ive read on this site, it sounds like the benefits of shooting in RAW are only as good as the converter you use

cheers:thumbs:

May sound like a silly question but do you have PS? There are a few free ones out there but I havent used them, a lot of people dont actually know that PS has a batch converter :)

RSE won't work with some newer cameras as development stopped 18 months ago.

If you have a Canon DPP which came with the camera gives good results otherwise you could try RAW Therapee - or download the trial version of Lightroom or Photoshop.

IMHO the best raw converter for Canon is DPP that came with the camera, it may not have all the fancy tweaks and cataloguing that lightroom has, but it just give the best images.

Thanks all. I'm using a Nikon and I dont have photoshop. Have been using GIMP and Paint Shop Pro. I think the standard Nikon Software, Picture Project, has/is a converter but from what i've read its rather limited.

I think you're right Andrew. I just tried using RawShooter and it doesnt detect my images as being RAW. I might try the trial version of lightroom

Best is pretty much a relative term.
There are quite a few threads about raw converters here, to sum it up, the good freebies are:

Nikon ViewNX
RawTherapee
UFRaw (if you have the GIMP installed, it'll install the GIMP plug-in as well)
RAWHide
dcraw + batch scripts

There might be some other ones, but these work rather well.

Does anyone know if RAW shooter will work on Vista?

I have just searched for free online image Converter and have tried a few, but was not happy. imverter.com works great without a lot of complex processes. I was able to use it straight away.
