Best Free FTP server software

I am working nearer to home next week so can chase up Canon then.

What is it you're trying to achieve? Automated FTP/dispatch of images via a tethered laptop?

We are trying to connect the 1Dx to laptop via an Ethernet connection (Cat6 in my case). This will enable the selection and transfer of images from the camera to the laptop (set up as an FTP server) during a game without the need to remove the CF card

It involves stuff like static IPs, looking out for windows firewall, turning off wireless to prevent possible conflicts. Way over my head :bonk:

So the problem is that the 1DX isn't able to contact the FTP server on the laptop? Can the laptop see the 1DX at all? Does the 1DX have FTP protocols built in, as opposed to LAN protocols? Can they see each other over LAN? I'm not familiar with the 1DX spec, as you can probably tell.

A friend of mine may be open to a challenge at the moment. He's a programmer with some rather special network skills. I described a slightly different scenario to him - file detection and automatic upload to the news editor, which appealed to him - but this sounds more like a connectivity issue.

[edit] Just done some reading up. Assuming you've gone for the FTP mode, rather than WFT, you should be able to connect. I don't think it's one for my mate, tbh.

Correct, it cannot connect

Yes, it can see or connect to the laptop and so I cant get past that point to see if the laptop can see the 1Dx

These are probably lame questions, but they're based on the premise that your camera and cable aren't faulty.. is the FTP server definitely set to accept anonymous connections? And is the FTP server definitely running on port 21.. or, more specifically, are the ports being served by the laptop and the ports being contacted by the 1DX definitely the same?

Ohhhh.. hang on... are you sure you're using the correct kind of ethernet cable?

If you're not going through a network hub, you need a "crossover" cable.

[edit] scrap that.. the 1DX has a gigabit ethernet port. Crossover cables not required.

[edit edit] scrap that scrap.. now reading that the 1DX may not be MDIX auto-sensing. The crossover cable is a possible solution.

Ive got a Cat6 cable that I reckon should work

this is in the manual

"use a highly shielded Cat 5e or higher STP Gigabit Ethernet cable"

Cat6 isn't the problem. The problem is whether it's a straight or crossover Cat6 cable that's the problem ;)

Any PC, or even a decent hi-fi shop should be able to make you up a crossover Cat6 for a fiver or so. :)

This appears to confirm that you need to pick up a crossover cable :)

The cable isn't the problem, that must be working fine because they have that working with EOS Utility.

It's just an FTP settings/connectivity issue.

Hmm.. never mind. I'm unfamiliar with the thing and don't know how the EOS utility connects :)

Nigel, Ploddles is correct that if you can connect using other programs via ethernet, the cable isn't the problem.

If you're headed that way, take your laptop and camera with you. I'm betting they'll have a cable made up that you can try.

I just suspect it may turn out to be something I'm doing or not doing correctly because I'm not network savvy and havent used FTP server before

To be perfectly honest, that's reason enough in my mind to call in to Maplin, to see if they can help you solve the problem. :)

Next time I go to Bigrob's I'll sort it out for him, as I'm a network man.

I bought a cat6 crossover cable from Maplins and asked them for some help in connecting the 1Dx to my laptop while I was there. They knew less than me, and I know the square root of sod all about networks and stuff :bang:

To repeat nowt to do with the cable. Any old cat5 cable will do.

Filezilla

Another Filezilla vote.

I use Apache FTP, no fancy user interface, just a solid FTP server.

I use it at home and recently helped to set it up at work (for getting 300mb+ reports/files to our clients, without having to post CD's every week)
