Best flash for Nikon for £100 ish

Want to get a flash for my D7000. As I know very little about the subject believe I need to get a flash with TTL and high speed sync is quite handy.
Quick look on Amazon and lots seem to get good reviews, Di866, YNs, SB400 and Jessops 360AFD.
Think the SB400 is the only one with high speed sync and is quite small but neg is limited swivel.
Budget is £100 ish, what would you recommend. Main use would be kids/family pics.

Metz 44 AF-1 or Sunpak PZ42X, both very good, I have Jessops as they are imported and cheaply made. Nissins after sales is C***, Both Sunpak and Metz are INTRO2020, with superb After sales.

The one on the left, I also use the one on the right which is a Sunpak for a Nikon on my Canon. My son often uses my Canon flashes on HIS Nikon.

Remember when on manual and wireless any make of flash will work with any make of camera.

Top is my Metz 45 CL-4 Digital.

Of course you could always get a pro Metz CL4 on ebay for about £120, then you HAVE got a flash.

Get it off camera :)

Buy a few cheap triggers and get some old SB25s or something, you know you want to!!

Metz 44 AF-1 looks interesting, does it do high speed sync?, assume I should try and get one that does high speed sync?

I am sure you will find a used gun on ebay for over £100 which does HSS.

However if you want HSS and reliability go for Nikon, Metz, Sunpak, where you also get service.

Is it HSS you want or strobe

What are you wanting to do, you say you know little about the subject but are looking for HSS, why?

Thought HSS was good for lighting subjects which are back lit? mainly people with back to sun
 
New - something like a Jessops 360 (£80) AF might be good.

Used - SB80DX might fall under your budget

Just out of interest, why do you need HSS (FP sync)?

For £100 you aren't going to be getting top-of-range gear so I'd think more about features and spec than whether or not you'll get UK warranty back-up or suchlike. In this instance, I'd always look at buying higher-spec stuff on the used market that has the features, was high-end when released but is maybe not a looker cosmetically. And I'd always look at buying a Nikon flash before anything else.....

If you want fill flash then go the Metz/Sunpak route.

I will stick by what I say, if it fails I want to know I can send it back and have it repaired asap.

Nikon SB400, buy a bracket for less £5 from ebay and an off camera cord £9 deliverd from Hong Kong off ebay.Perfect for what you want just point and shoot the camera works it all out for you.Go to Ken Rockwells site and look at what he says about the SB400.I have just bought one as above and it is perfect for family and friends.It will fit in your pocket and you will not know it's there.Don't waste money.
 
Sorry to butt in, but do you have an eBay link for the bracket - when I search for sb400 bracket - it comes up with something at £40+
 
Jessops flash £80, Metz £100, now what would I buy, cheap import re badged or Metz.

100% agree with off camera, but, don't use cables these days, wireless is less than £30

This is the flash bracket I bought it is light and just does the job it is supposed to do.I use it for boxing that way the rope does not get in the way of flash on top of the camera.if you want bounce flash it is no use with a Nikon SB400.

All work perfect on my D7000.Buy the Nikon SB400 from Amazon and if you don't like it you can sell it for £15 less than you paid for it on ebay (just look on ebay how much secondhand ones sell for!)

SB400 is a waste of time that's barely more powerful than the onboard flash.Save up a wee bit more and look out for a secondhand Sb600, that'll do everything you want and if you buy that carefully you shouldn't lose anything at all on it if you decide to sell it later.....

Just bought a Metz AF 50 for £140 from Fleabay. Al little out of budget but these are there to be had if you keep looking.
 
I have a Nissin Di622 which I bought for less than £100 new and it does the job great. Use it at weddings etc with no problems at all
 
Nissin Di866 does have hss BTW, I have one for my Canon.

I have a nikon sb900 for my nikon but for 350ish its well out your price range.

The jessops one works really well for what you pay for it. Although it don't feel the most well built and weighs next to nothing its works quite well.
 
How about the oloong sp-90? Take a look on eBay, as that should be within your budget and much more powerful than some of the other brands for the price. Just be careful with the model no. as I believe a zoom head (important) wasn't present in the previous model(s)?.

Can get a new Metz 44 AF or used good condition Metz 48 AF. Both are similar price, go for the new one I guess?

I am a lover of pre owned, until Jessops stopped selling pre owned I was a regular customer, now I am a regular of London Camera Exchange (LCE) and have just bought a set of 12mm and 25mm extension rings (NOT converters) for my Canon for closeup, £100 inc postage the pair, the 25mm new is £120+.

So, no, don't rule out a decent used flash from a decent supplier.

Nog, do you need fully-integrated, iTTL, FP-sync thingymajig or do you just want a flash that you can set the power manually and play around?
 
Think I need/want ittl, even if I eventually use it on manual will be nice to be able to stick on auto and hand over to daughter/wife.
 
The new Yongnuo 567 (or however it's called) might fit the bill. It will even work in Nikon and Canon i/eTTL as a slave.

I've seen some used Nissin 866 go for £100. If you're lucky you can find one.
 
Well Metz 44 AF 1 turned up today, think I might need to read the manual as it took me a couple of mins to figure why the TTL light was flashing, thought it was faulty:bang:
