I'm looking at buying a fish eye lens to sit on my 50D, what's the best lens out there for image quality and near 180 degree shooting?

I was looking at the Canon 15mm but I've heard on a crop you lose the 'fishyness' of it...

How about the Sigma 10mm Diagonal Fisheye...?

Anyone have an opinion on the matter?

The type of photos I'll be taking are simply creative shots of people, groups (maybe), interior shots of venues etc etc.

Thanks
Mike

Are you after the circular 180° image rather than the diagonal 180° one? If so, I think the Sigma 4.5mm f/2.8 EX DC is what you need. The 8mm Sigma chops a little of the top and bottom (landscape orientation) of a crop body image.

Cirrcular or diagonal - mmmm.... didn't know there were different types.

I'll get researching.

There's no budget in mind either - just simply the best of the best.

Do you really mean the best of the best? This will test your resolve, but it does cover all the options with L quality.

Canon have recently announced an 8-15mm zoom-fisheye just for you http://www.dpreview.com/news/1008/10082616canon8mm15mm.asp

Only £1,500. Pre-order here http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-canon-ef-8-15mm-f4-0-l-usm-fisheye-lens/p1522213

Have a look at the Tokina 10-17mm, it's a diagonal fisheye designed for crop bodies, although somewhat confusingly is a referred to by the manufaturer as a full-frame lens, however in this case f-f means that it produces an image that covers the entire sensor and so produces a "complete" image, unlike those such as the diagonal 8mm Sigma which give a circular picture.

Wow - 'looks for hammer to break piggy bank'

; )

These are both from Nikons rather than Canons but show the difference between crop pictures and FF ones taken with a Sigma 8mm.

This one

was taken with a D70 (1.5x crop) and shows how much gets clipped off the top and bottom of the frame (in landscape orientation).

this one

is from a D700 (FF) and shows the full circular image.

Be aware that fisheye lenses are really one trick ponies but that trick isn't an easy one to replicate, so if you want the trick, you need the pony that can do it.

Wow - thanks for the comparison photos - just what I needed.

Will suit my 5D MKii (or iii) once I can afford the upgrade.

I use a fisheye for nearly all of my underwater wide angle photography and the Tokina 10-17mm is by far the best lens for cropped sensor cameras. Add a 1.4Tc and the close focusing is amazing as well. If you are going to go full frame then the Tokina wont be for you, but the 15mm Canon will do the trick. If you are feeling flash then try the Canon 14mm mk2 L

8mm Samyang is a great lens, if a little manual for some.
