Best DSLR Package for £500?

Hey Guys!

A colleague of mine is buying his other half her first DSLR soon, and is wondering what to get her. His budget is £500 and he hasn’t a clue where to start. :thinking:

I’m a Nikon man personally, so excuse me for being a tad biased, but I said if it was me; I’d try and find a good deal on a D60 with a 18-55mm Kit Lens, a 70-300 VR (or 55-200mm VR), a 50mm Prime and a couple of decent filters. That should land you in roundabout the £500-mark give or take the f/stop price differences. :shrug:

I’d like you have you chaps as a second opinion though…

She doesn’t want it for anything in particular, just general amateur use, some macro stuff and travelling, etc.

And they have absolutely no preference regarding brand/system…

Let the Canon/Nikon war commence! :lol: Lol…

sounds pretty good, personally don't know much of performance difference between D40 and D60, but why not get D40 and get the 70-300 and a sigma 30mm HSM that should be pretty much bang on the money. assuming you pickup stuff second hand.

new, your camera kit is £300 for D60 kit and 70-300 is over £300
 
the trouble is that the winter sales have gone and now a d60 with 18-55mm VR will cost you around £380. i think you should pick a camera model from each brand that would suit her needs and then go into a shop handle them and go through the process of elimination.

yeah, there's not much difference I dont think 10mp compared to 6mp, and 3fps rather than 2.5, but apart from that they're pretty similar. about a £60-ish price difference from what I can see?
D40 is very good! :thumbs: (I have one) ;)

Nikkor 55-200VR is quite a good call i recond (and only around £100 brand new!) ;)
 
firend of mine just bought an oly e420 dual lens kit for 400 pound and its a sweet little body, makes my 450 look big :D
she should play, he went for that because of the shape of the grip nowt to do with the cameras abilities
 
you can get a canon eos 1000d, with an 18-55 is lens, 70-300mm tamron lens and 8gb sd card for 495, i bought one at the beginning of the month before the price rise and i'm really happy with it all so far.
I preferred it over the d60, the menu and controls just felt a little more for me and the way i work.

Value for money has to be Olympus, though I wouldn't go down that route personally because of the smaller sensors, which are relatively noisy at even medium ISOs, nevermind high ISO. (Prepares for backlash ;):lol:) Just going from experience. Oh, and the viewfinder can be like looking down a dim tunnel. :lol:

Pentax and Sony give value for money for bodies, if not in lenses. OK if you are not planning on getting a huge range of lenses.

Canon and Nikon give a large range of lenses, and a range of camera bodies.

Choose what lenses you want to buy (if any) at the same time as your camera, or just the kit lens or others at the same time. I'd set a price for a body, or body and kit lens, then go to a shop and handle your shortlist. One persons tiny and cramped, is another person's perfect fit, is another persons cheap feeling. ;)
