Hello all.

I'll keep it simple, im looking to buy a domain name, so where could you suggest getting it from? My knowledge on website is limited so any tips would be great.

Thank you.

I use Vidahost https://www.vidahost.com UK based with good UK support and freephone sales & support number or an 01 number to call off your mobile. Was using 123-reg but because of various aspects of how they work, I've gradually punted them all over to Vidahost instead.

I always keep my domain name and hosting accounts separate.

For .co.uk domain names I use UK Reg

For .com domain names I use Namecheap

I use 1&1. From what I recall, if it's just a domain name you're after, it's about £2 a year.

From my experience I’ve found Gandi to have the best customer service and ethics out of the bigger, well established registrars. I use them pretty much exclusively for my domains.

TSOhost have always been good to me, support is good too.

there isnt a best as asked in the subject.. all you will get in here is 20 different people with 20 different answers:)

domain names are very cheap for what they are.. so dont skimp.. going down to a pound a domain or somehting silly usualy have string attached...

a domain name is of little use without hosting.. so you may want to look into that side of things first.. you will need a domain registrar that will easily let you host elsewhere and not just with them..

I am not going to reccomend anyone.. i woudl imagine any of the above mentionebd will do.. but you do need to think hosting

1&1 do hosting too. However, for a quick and easy site that you can forward your domain name too, I've used Google Sites.

Thank you everyone, I have now created my domain :) feel free to suggest any websites. Im currently looking to go with square space.

namecheap and enom for me....I've got reseller status with enom so get them nice and cheap :)

Web hosting? I wouldn't mind giving you a referral link from one of the hosts I'm using (or have used). If you don't want that though, I'd suggest going with Dreamhost, although I heard that lately their quality of service went down due to their servers being overpopulated. I haven't tried them, they're above my budget, even if they are said to provide high quality service.

Hah, Isn't buying from yourself against the rules?

Never known enom to put such rules in their terms and conditions to be honest

Oh I didn't have in mind Enom particularly, I just expected such rules to generally be in pretty much any ToS, as at least if you use referral links/discount codes on say HostGator, you'd be violating the ToS. Same goes for many other hosting providers I've used over the years.

I log on their control panel and I get their pricing to my tier. I'm sorry buddy, I really don't know what you mean....

Current control panel suggest that .co.uk cost is £4.38 which includes everything like anonymity protection etc. That is the cost to me. All I did was get an account with them...And when you compare the .xxx domains, or other domains the difference runs up quite rapidly...£50 vs £80 and upwards....

Anyway don't want this to turn into a p***ing contest, just saying don't forget enom :)

You can not post referral links here on the forum, it is against the rules.

Also Dreamhost?? your kidding right??

I wouldn't touch Dreamhost with a very very long barge pole, they are ones of the worst around and should be avoided.

As I said, lately it may have went down (thanks for confirming). It used to be a decent hosting service though, I spoke with a couple of people who used them a couple years back. I'm quite happy with one.com at the moment, even if their panel sucks big time.

It is not a recent thing, it is sustained terribly bad service over many years

I first had the displeasure of having to deal with Dreamhost some 15 odd years ago and nothing has changed, still rubbish.

Most people who know much about anything to do with the hosting industry would never recommend Dreamhost to their clients

Interesting. Since what we heard is so different, I'm curious - why is Dreamhost so bad?

Hmmm well i`ll shop about for websites then before I decide on one. Ok, so now I own the domain name danielmorganphotography.co.uk, How do you make a personal email with this? So I get emails to e.g info@danielmorganphotography.co.uk ?

Thanks guys

You need to get mail hosting can be the same as your web hosting but can also be elsewhere.
