What is one of the better compact cameras?
I read about canon G10 or panasonic Linux x 3??

Depends how compact you want to go, personally I favour the small size of the Canon powershot S100

RAW, 24mm 5x lens, Manual control, Full HD movie, fits in your pocket

I have a G12, and have just got a P7100 (Nikon) - wow, what a difference. the Nikon knocks spots off the G12, well maybe knocks spots off, but I prefer it. I shall use the G12 in its diving housing for wet stuff, but otherwise it will stay at home and the Nikon will be the weapn of choice: 28-200mm does it for me, plus with the wide converter I have a 21mm.

It handles well and takes a cracking picture. I took it out with me on a boat shoot on Frday, along with the d3 kit. I am blown away by the results it has produced (first day out with it). i am going to mix some of the compact shots in with the D3 shots and see if anyone notices! If nothing is said and they use some of the shots off the compact then that is what I shall take ONLY on some of my jobs where no action is needed. Where I need to get action, obviously I'll have to take the SLR kit, but hiking miles with it into the interior to do shooting or fishing features I will happily use the P7100 going on what I have seen on the screen - and that wasn't even shooting RAW, just straight to jpeg (because I was only playing).

Hello Donna,

First of all, I think you're referring to the Lumix LX-3, made by Panasonic. Linux is an operating system for computers ;-)

Secondly, what you would consider one of the better compacts might not be the same as someone else's view. It all depends on your needs, wishes and priorities. Canon's S100 is a fine camera indeed, so is the G12, Nikon's P7100, and Fujifilm's X10 (which I happen to use with great pleasure and equal results). There are tons of great compacts out there...

Perhaps you could tell us a little more about what your looking for in a camera, what your photographic experience is, etc. That will certainly help narrow down the search for the better compact.

Cheers,
Rob

The best current ones are Canon s100, G10/12, Olympus XZ-1, Lumix LX5 or LX3 and Ricoh GRD 3 (no zoom).

Fuji X10 for me.

Steve
yes the X10 looks like a good compact, most of the compacts are basic little and boring point and shoots, and you hold these at arms lenght to take photos :shake:

Not many decent compacts about with aperture priority shutter priority manual, oh and with a viewfinder. Why is it so hard to find a compact with these functions, at a sensible price? I would rather use my iphone than a basic little compact, it would probably produce better images in many cases !

Another thumbs up for the Canon S100.

I have just purchased one and the picture quality is fantastic.

Nikon P7100, really impressed with the image quality.
