My favourite lens is the 70-200 f/2.8 which has a brilliant IQ, followed by the 24-70 - other than the long primes, what other Canon lenses have the IQ to match these two?

I forgot to mention the 85mm L f/1.2 :)

I get to play with Canon lenses all day and i have to say the 85mm f1.2L is the beast lens canon produce. i have had a few customers melt when they test it!!

Both the lenses you mention are very capable zooms but I'd imagine that any prime lens (L or not) would be more than a match for them in the IQ stakes.

one third of the holy trinity... 35mm f/1.4L of course :)

You can't beat the Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM but the price reflects it!

In terms of price / quality I think both 50mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8 are top notch.

i have a 70-200mm f2.8 mk2 and its the best lens i have ever used and own. aint tried any other L lenses besides the 24-105L

The 50mm f1.8 is the BEST IQ/price combo Canon make with IQ the level of almost any "L" glass lens.

.

50mm f1.8 nifty fifty? its ok but the build quality feels like i bought it from pound land and the AF is pretty much useless when the suns not out.

I Have to agree with this the build quality is terrible, my front element dropped out onto the floor. I think it was due to me using the Canon hood screwing and unscrewing must have broken the clips inside that keeps the element attached.

IQ on the other hand is superb for the price, but won't be buying another one.

I love my Canon 135L f2.0. IQ was quite a jump up from the Canon 24-70mm f2.8. You know you have a magical lens when every snapshot makes you grin like an idiot at the image quality.

Another vote for this incredible lens. :) A days shoot armed just with this lens produced some fantastic shots.

50mm f/1.4 ... I adore this lens .... I havent used the flash since buying it, it just doesnt need it

Its sharp when you want it to be soft when you want it to be, and soo fast.

Really makes me want the 28mm version now as the cropped sensor on the 50mm makes it a litle too long for some shots

edit: Glad I spent the money and went for the 1.4 over the 1.8 now as well ...... so many of my shots are in dark rooms and with a new born quite impromptu ... and needless to say the amount taken at 1.4 and 1.6 is astonishing !

There seems to be an emphasis on L lenses, but dont forget the others!

The EFS 10-22. Has to be the most accomplished UWAs on the market.

Match? Dont know about that but can certainly BEAT :)

The 135mm f2 and the 35mm f2 both beat the socks off your two lens... beat not match :)

just out of interest has anyone used a 35mm f1.4 on a 7d?

Agreed Odd Jim. I really like the Canon 10-22mm. Not entirely sure if I will be as happy with the 16-35 if I go FF.

Bob, The 70-200 MkII is amazing.....I've owned The 50 1.2, 85 1.2, and 135 2.0....All fantastice lenses and give great results but the 70-200mk2 is up there with the best of them...

You can't beat the Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM but the price reflects it!

The 400mm 2.8 is also a fantastic lens...I wass at the Challenge Cup Semi with Leeds and Castleford... The results are really amazing.... the 300mm takes some beating though...Both work horses for the Pro Sport photographers

i have a 70-200mm f2.8 mk2 and its the best lens i have ever used and own. aint tried any other L lenses besides the 24-105L

Got to agree here ....easily the best all rounder !

I agree Tug, the 70-200 MkII (I've got one) is pretty amazing for a zoom and can compete with primes if the yardstick for IQ is simply what people refer to as "sharpness". I always think the OP's term "IQ" should embrace more.....colour rendition and bokeh at the very least.....and I don't believe that the 70-200 is quite at the top of the class in these aspects.

Acceptably "sharp", very flexible (the reason I have one) and a little judicous PP can bring out the best in it. If we're looking at the final image then it's fine but the OP was asking about lenses so I responded accordingly.

All IMHO

What do you mean the AF is useless when the sun is out? Do you mean it won't focus, thus not able to take a shot? Ta

I find the AF as good as any non USM/HSM lens. Bit noisier but just as effective, even in low light.

But, he did say it is not very good in low light. Can that cause it not to take a pic in AF?

I guess, as with any lens.

I have to agree with Jim. I own two ' L ' Lenses, 100 macro 2.8L IS and the 70-200L f4 and I much perfer the EFS 10-22.
I think it really comes down to your photography requirements as to what lens you would nominate.

200mm f/2.8 is certainly excellent optically, but sadly non IS. 85mm f/1.8 is another gem even if it doesn't have the L designation. 24-105mm is superb, and definitely nicer than 24-70mm to use. 70-200mm is the very best though unless we are talking about the big fat white primes.

What would you say is a good lens to replace the Canon 18-55 is? A good all rounder but not too expensive.

The problem is, most good "allrounders" are expensive!

I mean the lens won't af indoors or in a dark cloudy day really well but my tamron f2.8 17-50mm is decent af indoors. Of course my 70-200 blows both lens af wise though.

I don't have that problem with my nifty
