Guys, apologise if this has been covered elsewhere, I've searched got nothing.

The other day one of my L glass lenses slipped out my bag on a beach unbeknownst to me then 3 miles away I realised I'd dropped it. Thankfully and unbelievably it was still there and undamaged but it's taught me a lesson that I need cover.

Does anyone have any? Any recommendations?

Are you not covered by home insurance? You will need away from home cover. Mine has a clause that anything over £1500 individual item value needs separate cover and a valuation or copy of receipt.

Assuming you are not using your equipment for professional use then I agree that it will tend to be cheaper to extend your home insurance. In fact it's worth checking as if you have all risks away from home then you may already be covered.

I've got insurance with Photoguard and I recently had to claim for a 7D that I dropped on a carpark while setting up. I got a quote and sent it in with the claim form (I'd missed sending in some info so my claim was delayed a bit) and within a week they'd agreed to pay the repair bill, which was £600. The camera was just about rebuilt at Lehmans and the insurance paid the repairers directly so I didn't have to pay anything out to get it under way.

I've got around £10,000 worth of kit covered for around £300 a year. It gives me 'left in vehicle' cover, transport cover and no excess. I'd recommend them to anyone now. If you can't get cover from your house insurance (mine goes to £1500 max per item and I've got a body and lens that are more than that) so it wasn't good for me, but worth checking on.

My house insurance is due for renewal in july so I'll be looking round for a better deal soon, my contents insurance is with RBS at the moment but by the posts I've read on here recently it wont be for much longer.

I'm covered through house insurance. It added £30 on to the yearly premium. This covers me for up to £3500 worth of kit. It is covered anywhere in the UK and is covered for everything, loss, accidental damage, faults, theft etc. Excess is £100 if I ever have to claim.

I use my house insurance, costs about £70 to extend it for items above £1500 and less than £7500.

I was worried when travelling abroad, but it covers it for up to 60 days in any single visit abroad and multiple trips are allowed.

Covers accidental damage, theft etc. you obviously still have to take care of the goods i.e. don't forget it somewhere or leave it on the front car seat.

I am also covered for items left in the boot of the car which some insurers don't do.

I've heard it said that some insurers who cover your gear while in the car boot, or covered hatchback, insist it's also actually secured to the inside of the vehicle in some way? Presumably to stop/delay the opportunist `smash, grab & run`scrotes.

Whats the issues with RBS. Ive got all mime insured with them.

Im covered for about £8-9000 I tjink and had to specify any iteams over £1500.
That cover me for home out and 60 day trips abroad.i think its about £150 ontop of my existing insurance per year.

OK again thanks for the info. I really just want to make sure I'm totally covered up to £10k for every eventuality - theft, loss, damage regardless of how it happens. My camera gear is too precious to me for it to not be covered in some way.

Don't forget to get a quote from http://www.cliik.co.uk/

Well recommended on here and it's who I have mine with.

Not sure Carl. Give them a ring as they are very helpful or po over an email.

Im insured with Photoguard, cost me £31 for the year for up to £900 of equipment, seemed to cover pretty much everything id need as a hobbyist. Im probably covered under my parents house insurance while im at uni but I thought £30 to make sure is nothing really.
They were the cheapest I could find though, especially up to £900 of cover.

A lens fell out of your bag without you even realising?

Forget insurance, get a decent bag first!

Aaduki are doing a 14 months for the price of 12 plus 10% off just now for anyone that visited the photovision roadshows.

One word of caution about putting your gear on your home insurance. They only accept camera gear if you are amateur, if you sell or have sold images in the past they may decline any claim so best to ask first and not just presume.

Photoguard also. Never made a claim.

Be wary of getting cover on your household insurance. If they can prove you've used your equipment to earn money then you're not covered. They are always doing this to musicians. A friend who had his £1200 Takamine acoustic stolen in a house robbery got nothing off the insurance company because he plays in a band and had earned money (read: pittance) from using it.
