I am looking to get a new digital SLR for use for photography in nightclubs, but also wish to use the same camera for other general use. What do people recommend?

Im currently looking at the Canon 450D. Not sure which flash gun at all though!

I haven't got an exact budget but dont really want to spend more than £700.

Has anyone got any recommnedations?

Thanks in Advance!

The 450D would be fine, you could get a canon flashgun with E-TTL so that it can be automatically exposed correctly, or you could just get a 2nd hand flashgun from ebay. make sure that you can adjust the power. you can always practice with the flash before you go to the nightclubs, it will be pretty dark inside them, so the settings on the camera shouldnt have to change that much in each nightclub!

hope that helps!

I did a shoot for the council at a youth event in a nightclub. I used a 450D, with a Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 and a Canon 17-40mm f/4L. Both lenses performed admirably - only concern was the amount of distortion given by the Siggy at 10mm (but made for some good wide shots). The flashgun I used was a 430EX II. I found myself using the 10-20 more, as the 17-40 wasn't quite wide enough for many shots of large groups of people.

I'd get a 450D + Siggy 10-20mm + Speedlite 430EX II if you can stretch that far.

450D Used = ~£300
Sigma 10-20 Used = ~£300 (maybe a bit less), £380 new
Speedlite 430EX II = ~£200 new

Those are prices off the top of my head.

Thanks for both your replies, i think i will go with the 450D with original lens get the flash gun lareneg mentions and then get the 2nd lens when i can afford to :)

lareneg off subject but was wondering how and what programme you use to watermark your photos, just having a look at your site and think its subtle yet noticeable.

Cheers Guys!

I agree 450d is a cracker, I shoot family stuff on 5d and use 450d which is one of our training camera sometimes as well. cheap, plastic, but great images. John

Sounds spot on. Add a Stofen style diffuser - it's what most clubs snappers use.

You don't need anything special equipment wise for that. Bone up on slow-sync flash technique - dragging the shutter. That's the trick.

i'd recommend a 550ex...a bargain for a flash for nightclub stuff.

Af assist beam of the flash is a god send!
I use a 50D or my club work and i am sure the 450D is just as good.

I tend to find my old 10-22mm was a little too wide and i was always zooming in and wanting more. Its nice to have for the odd large croud but as said distortion doesnt flatter people at close range. I now use a 17-40 (i now have a 5D and couldnt use the 10-22mm anymore)on the 50D and find that much more usuable.

oh and i usea 580EXII for flash but honestly if you dont need the bells and whistles of this flash any other compatible flash with a decent rating will do.
