Hi All,

Looking for some recommendations for the best budget NAS on the market.

It will only really be used to store documents etc. so that they can be accessed by my wife and I when we are away from home/out of the office.

I appreciate there are on-line cloud services available for this sort of thing but I am looking for something I have total control over

So any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Take care,

Keith

What's you budget and space requirement?

Personally I wiouldnt go below a 4 bay synology or dlink

I am not looking to run any kind of back up on it, that is already covered, I just want to be able to access some documents over the net.

Certainly not looking in the price range of synology, looking at sub £100, the less it costs the better.

Space wise, around 500GB

Just a boggo mybook then maybe.

Don't know if they have any remote access capability without going down VPN route etc, if they do then sign up for a free dyndns account and set it on your router.

what about dropbox?

D-Link ShareCentre 320

Mine works flawlessly, and apparently so do most of the others.

Alternatively, Skydrive. Waaaaaayyyyy better than Dropbox IMHO.

Have you got an old pc lying around? If so just install freenas or similar, wack a network cable in and bobs your uncle

"Best" and "budget" are mutually exclusive... If you really want a budget one, make sure you get it from somewhere with a good guarantee and returns policy.

I have a couple of hard drives lying around of differing sizes, a 250GB and a 160GB

Would I be able to pop then into the D-Link ShareCentre 320 and use them without any problems?

Or should the drives be of the same size/spec?

depends.. most true RAID NAS (drobo is the exception, it doesnt use "RAID" persay) will shrink them all to the same size. for example if you had 2 1TB drives and a 2TB drive, youd end up with 3x 1TB drives. if the RPM speeds are different theyre normally all throttled to the same (slowest) speed.

Cheers for that Neil, much appreciated

Sorry to take a little off topics. Neil, what is your opinion on Drobo?

Doesn't sound like you need a nas, set up a virtual private network to your pc. Depending on your router you may have to set up port forwarding or set up the vpn there. If your router and pc support wake-on-lan then it doesn't need to be on all the time either.

Haven't used one personally, read a few issues surrounding failed units with lost data and no support from drobo and steered clear.

Synology have been excellent though, they'll remote admin if necessary and their rma process is easy.

Yes, according to the interwebs you can do this in 'Standard' mode.

Does the ShareCentre 320 etc come with a web interface? Ive decided i want a nas box for storing movies etc so i can connect my xbox360 to it? And also setup a ftp on it for a cctv camera. Any suggestions?
