Getting my son a laptop (almost 8) and need to get a book so he know Windows 10 (I have been on macs for almost 8 years with just the odd bit of Windows use so not loads of help!). There does not seem to be any books for kids, so choosing between a dummies style book but have also seen they do one aimed at seniors. Would the seniors one be a better bet as he is starting from scratch?

Could you not sit with him and teach him? And maybe encourage him to write down what he learns - you could create and self publish your own book!

And more seriously, I'd recommend a Raspberry Pi and a Scratch programming guide.

+1 for scratch and learning together. Although why you'd submit him to Windows 10 when he could be using OS X....

I would imagine if he's like most 8 year olds he would pick it up reasonably quickly if you go through the basics with him. I think most operating systems these days are built to be as intuitive as possible so any new users can grab one and start using it straight away.

The other alternative may be for you to find a bunch of good Youtube videos or a channel in particular that specialises in Windows stuff and go from there but that may be easier tackled as and when it's necessary.

Well I don't know Windows and also he will need to learn at his own pace when I am not there.

What is there to learn about Windows 10 anyway? Surely most of the everyday use comes down to whatever applications you're using anyway?

Never used Windows 10 so no idea. I remember I learnt more about applications and systems with a book to refer to.

When I was 8 I picked up a book and taught myself BBC basic. It's really not to young to learn basic programming skills that could set him.up for life.

As for learning Windows 10, pop down to WHSmith and see if there's an overpriced Windows magazine. I have seen publications for iThings etc. Also, a for dummies book might also work?

I'm not sure if there's an updated Windows 10 edition, but 'How to Do Just About Anything on a Computer' is clear and enjoyable. I've bought people copies of this before. Not child specific but fine for an eight year old.

My son found it extremely intuitive and has asked no questions with how to operate 10.

Maybe introduce him to 10 and get a book if the need arises. Bear in mind that 10 has a getting started app which will no doubt help :)

I really don't think a book is required. My lot seems to have no problem switching between OS X, Windows 10, Ubuntu 15, etc.

Scratch is a nice introduction, but again designed to learn based on discovery and trying things out.

Mine are 9 and 13 now. Their favourite apps are now the ones they create themselves. Their Python skills and using Atom or Sublime Text are getting scarily good. Better than some in the office ;)

My point being, unless he really requires a book or has the Internet blocked, I'd just let him do his thing and explore and discover. Blended online learning is so much more current than using books for that as it is outdated the moment it's printed.
