Yes
im thinking of upgrading my body, not just yet though as i cant currently afford it,

but for 5dmkii money (second hand) what else compares, 1dsmkii??
also like the 7d too, i do a bit of wildlife stuff but not enough to warrant the high fps as i think it would be more suited to high speed sports etc, something that i dont do.
my main interest is wildlife, landscape, portrait etc...

also not bothered about going F/F, and losing the 1.6x, its not as if im shooting half way down a race track or up the other end of a football field..

what im after is good high iso, fast af, and quality pixels.. :D

oh, and currently have a 50d!!

wes

:)

5d2 S/H is ball park 1300, that gives you options inc 1d3 1ds2 (I'd skip it as an option as the mk2 era is vvv old tech) or 7d

iso: 5d2 7d/1d3
iq: 5d2 1d3 7d
af: 7d 1d3 5d2

those are ball park rankings

oooh, and it just so happens im seeing a man tomorrow that owns all 3... i'll be picking his brains (again) :D

next stop from 50D i would concider the 7D. especially as youll be needing the larger crop over the 1D for focal length.

when i had the 20D (1.6x) i mostly used my 70-200, now ive got the 1Dmk3 (1.3x) ive had to move to the 120-300 to get the same "sort" of usable range.

i got 70-200 and 300mm prime and 1.4x t.c, hence not worried about going F/F.. :)

like google.... i got it covered.. ;)

At the moment I have two x 40D which I use just for concert photography. Thinking of moving up to a 5D mkII with the 24-70 f2.8 to get more wide angle from the full frame and a 7D for the 70-200 f2.8. My thoughts were to hire both for a weekend, to see what results I get before handing over the cash.

My personal opinion as a general all round camera I would and did go with the 7D, newer technology top notch focussing, especially if you take moving wild life such as birds in flight etc. But then I also do a lot of aviation and motorsport photography and it is ideal for that. A recent magazine review also put the 7D very slightly above the 5DII as it is the better all round camera. However if you are just doing portrait/studio work and Landscapes then the slightly better image quality and dynamic colour range of the 5DII makes it the obvious choice.

my point was that 300mm on a 1.3 or FF may not be long enough for wildlife. but it depends what kind of wildlife and how far away from "it" you are.

oh right, yes true, although the 1.4x tc would come in handy, i rarely shoot anything further than 30ft away.

:)

I have some friends with the 5D mkII and they do complain about the speed of the autofocus.

Re 7D and 1D MK III if you are not fussed about video I would go for the 1 D MK III the picture quality is better and the autofocus is fractionally better.

The 7D would be my choice having used it and the 5D MKII, full frame lovely but camera not as good spec as the 7D and i can only assume Canon will be bringing out a newer model soon as it is so far behind the D700.
I would certainly wait as i think this time next year the 5DMKII will be had for well under 1k used.
