Ah well maybe you should have added "at the time" which is more about a topic of "horses for course" esp when you could add "good handling camera, with winder, flashgun and lens combo" which throws the thread all over the place
I don't know how many 35mm SLRs that have been made and have\had\used only about twenty and most of them have a top speed of 1000/sec so any one fits my needs for 95% of my shooting, and as above for the 5% i.e. the combo

Another camera that feels right in my hands is the EOS 300..I think I paid £4 with 35-80 Ultrasonic zoom, very handy for a walkabout as it only weighs 500g (inc two AA batteries) and IIRC you can use the EF to M42 converter to use VG screw lenses for more serious stuff. But slower on the AF compared to my F90x.

I went for the "deluxe" 500 with a 28~80, though I had to fork out £10 for the privilege.

You're quite right about its comfort factor...

Looking down you can see why it fits the hands nicely and the shutter button is just in the right place...I've only used it once to check it out but if you are going on holiday and with kids throwing sand around what more could you want for a throw away price

If you need a medium format system camera, the SQ-A handles perfectly fine for what it is. I like that you never need to turn the darn thing, the WLF is great, and it's not even particularly heavy as medium format goes. If you don't require a medium format system camera though, then there are likely cameras much better suited to you, yes.

I should have added, I love the handling of my Yashica Mat. It's so well balanced from a strap.

Well I've just read the manual for the EOS 300 and if you can get one for under a tenner with lens it must be one of the best buys of the year..Why? well there is not much it can't do for normal shooting with shutter speeds from 30 secs to 1/2000 and you can choose AF or manual...but more interesting is why buy an old screw lens camera esp with 1.37v batteries as with the cheap EF to M42 adapter it will meter with any screw lens that can be stopped down, and it looks like you can set the camera on AV and it will choose the shutter speed (only tested pointing the camera in the dark and bright light). And if your Nikon camera breaks down you can get a EF to Nikon adapter for about £10, but not sure if it would work with AF but should for manual.
Well my heavy Chinon CE M42 is going in the drawer as I'll use the EoS 300 instead as any screw lenses that can't be stopped down will use my Pentax S3

I loved the handling of the Contax 159MM I bought a few years ago so much that I just bought a spare. It's light, compact has manual wind on, a 1/250th sync and a 1/4000th top shutter speed and feels great in the hand.

I use it with 50/1.7, 45/2.8 or 18mm Zeiss lenses and a couple of Tamron Zooms.

My worst camera was a Canon EF bought in the 90s because I didn't want to risk my T90. The EF is crude boxy, heavy and clunky.

Best; Pentax Spotmatic - a lot of nostalgia as it was my second SLR
Worst - Mamiya 6x6 TLR - it just didn't suit my style of photography, although the results were great.

I like my Pentax 6x7 mk2 , Its a giant SLR , It makes me stop / think and take my time when using it , sort of relaxed photography

Best would be the Pentax ME Super, worst would be the XPan. Fantastic camera though it was, it always felt like I was wielding an awkward little brick :/

Well my heavy Chinon CE M42 is going in the drawer as I'll use the EoS 300 instead as any screw lenses that can't be stopped down will use my Pentax S3

Took the RB67 and EOS 300 out with Pentax M42 lenses and saw a great shot of a decent bit of scenery with 6 kites (birds) so waited with the EOS till the 6 birds were in the frame, pressed the shutter and the mirror didn't return WTF...silly me the EOS will only work if using a lens that doesn't have the M42 pint sticking out (which interferes with the mirror)..h'mm I only tested it with a lens that didn't have a pin :banghead:
