Best all round every day lens ?

I got a 24-105 f4 L as the kit lens to my 5D2 but it spends about as much time on my 7D as it does on my 5D2. It's a great lens, good focal range and great IQ. Unless you need 2.8, for which you pay the premium then the 24-105 f4 L will do you fine. Plus if you ever do go FF (with the release of the 5D3 the 5d2 might might come down in price a bit) you will have a great lens go go on with.

There's nothing wrong with using prime lenses as normal lenses, I use my 50mm (on fill frame) more than any other lens.

How are you current lenses holding you back? Not long enough etc? And what type of photos are you planning in taking with your new lens?

I love the Canon F1.8 50mm I've got and use it all the time for my gig photography so its nearly always on my camera, but a couple of times when I've been out and about in normal daylight, not the usual dark and dingy environment I normally inhabit the focusing hasnt quite been 100%, or I havent been able to stand far enough back from someone / thing to get every thing in the shot.

I've also read how easily the focusing on the plastic bodied lenses can get knocked out of sync if they suffer a knock or jolt.

In saying that I've also read how the 450d autofocus isnt always the best.....

I think what I'm saying is a few times recently when I should have got 'the shot', when I've got it on the computer its been slightly out of focus, which has been incredibly disappointing.

If we didn't live so far apart I would happily let you borrow my 24-70. £1k is too much to spend on an internet recommendation so I would advise trying to borrow one/ rent one first.

I learnt the hard way, spent the cash and have hardly ever used it since! Don't get me wrong it is a beautiful lens but it doesn't really suit my shooting style.

I am considering selling my 24-70 and investing in different kit - but then I wouldn't have a 24-70! Perhaps I need to hold on to it, as I am sure I will grow into it LOL.

Wow that is a fantastic offer, thank you.

So what do you use instead of the 24-70 ?

17-55 on a 1.6x crop body definitely (as it will act like a 27-88)

My thoughts exactly. I'm just upgrading our works kits and although we have some 17-40mm f/4s and two Tamron 17-50s, the 17-55 is the one I've suggested we get. I've had a play with it and it's not bulletproof like the Nikon alternative but as an everyday lens it's sharp and focusses spot-on. It's a no-brainer really.

I keep falling back on my EFS 10-22 & 28 f1.8. If I need longer I use my 70-200 f2.8. I wish I could get more value out of the 24-70 but I never do, parting with it, though. is proving very difficult - perhaps if that full frame camera happens the story will change.
