I use a powerful old Mesh for work and 4 super Tosh L300 pentium dual cores for training (which cost less than £300 each 18 months ago) but now I want a 17" laptop for my personal photography. I've invested a bit in the business lately so I don't have a lot to spend.

So ideally not widescreen, battery life doesn't matter, I shoot mainly raw and use lightroom so need a good processor and ram of course. A degree of flexibility of angle of view and good screen essential.

So what's bad and what's good in 17"? Tosh? Sony? HP? Acer? Dell?

Any opinions welcome.

Thanks John

I bought a Samsung R710 AS06UK about a year ago now and it has been great. It came with vista, but upgraded that to Windows 7 64 bit when it came out. Photoshop and Lightroom run great on it. It was around £900 when I bought it but I'm sure i seen it around the £550-£600ish mark not to long ago.

do they even make 4:3 laptops any more? I cant think of any off the top of my head, even less that would be 17" in size.....

for just photos I would have thought any recent laptop would work well, make sure you get an i5 or i7 I suppose and not a legacy core2duo if you can afford it, but memory is easy and cheap to upgrade wso I would not worry over 3gig or 4gig etc...
