I'm off to Berlin on Sunday for 5/6 days and wondered if anyone has been and knows of good photography opportunities. Looking for city scape/buildings etc. My trip is to photograph wild Goshawks in the area so any suggestions for late afternoon or night would be best.

sorry Mark its been over 20 years since I live in Berlin they used to have wall around it then ( think that was to keep us in ;) ) which part your going? the old West/East side both had city scape/buildings that was worth taking photos of

Hey Mark I was there last summer and unfortunately lost most of my photos due to a laptop crash :( but its a stunning city to visit and great for photography!

You can't go wrong with any of these sights:

  • Alexanderplatz - this is basically the main centre now close to where the TV Tower is which makes for some cracking shots, you can also go up into the Sky Bar of the Park Inn which is meant to give a great view of the city but I didn't go when I was there.
  • Bundestag - German Parliament building is worth a look, it was quite busy when we were there but I've seen some cracking night shots when it would presumably be quieter, also quite close to here is the Brandenburg Gate which is worth a look. There probably more govt buildings here too but I didn't pay too much attention!!
  • Museum Island (Museumsinsel) - This is the site of a number of museums in Berlin and also the Berlin Cathedral is nearby, the cathedral is stunning although there was some scaffold last summer :(
  • Also nearby the Brandenburg Gate is the Holocaust Memorial, it made for some good shots and is somewhere everyone should visit when in Berlin.
  • Potsdamer Platz - This is part of the city that was left desolate during the Cold War and has been massively developed since, its mainly modern glass structures like the Sony Center but I've sen some great cityscapes from here.
  • Gendarmenmarkt - This is another public square in the centre, this however is home to 3 cracking buildings, the Berlin Concert Hall (Konzerthaus) along with the French & German churches. It also happens to be very close (same street) to a brilliant Bavarian Beerhalle... Augustiner am Gendarmenmarkt which serves the best Bavarian Lager and German food!

There were quite a few places I didn't get to because I was only there for a few days, the old Airport Terminal building at Tempelhof (now a Park) is stunning although I'm not sure what its currently being used for (sure I read it was being used to house migrants), theres also a few monument parks some of which contain a lot of old Soviet Era bits which look very different!

Generally though its another of of those cities where theres photo opportunity all around! Any queries give me a shout!

Many thanks for all that in depth info, we leave in the morning and made notes of your advice. :)
