Berlebach Tripod - I struck lucky!!

I have been looking for a wooden tripod for the last day or so, and had almost decided that I would buy a Berlebach model. These are pretty rare in the UK, bl**dy expensive, and only available from Mr CAD. The one I wanted was the 3042P, a set of legs, with a centre column, for around £200. I had searched eBay UK< EU and USA for a used one, of any description, all to no avail.

I thought I'd have another look on eBay before I went to bed, and sure enough, on the first page was a brand new Berlebach 3042P, with post, and an added extra - a 55mm built in ball head, 'Buy it now' and all for half the price of a standard model:D:D:D

It had only been on offer for 15 minutes - am I glad I decided to have one last look!!

Thats something else, I like the sensual pose in the first shot...

The legs themselves look like pretty straightforward construction. Do you know what type of wood they are made from?

They look very smart! Sounds like you were rather lucky!

You sure were lucky, that or your prayers were impressive! Well done for catching that, what do you think the odds are of finding what you want, being it so rare, and at such a late moment in time!

Hope you manage to get a good focusing rail to match with that. Would be a shame to just put something "common" on such a beautiful 'pod.

I guess the minimum odds are over 2000:1, because that's how many tripods were for sale in the UK only, add the rest of the world, then factor in it was the one I was looking for, that I decided that I'd have one last search, and that it had only just been advertised!!

The odds must have been astronomical. I guess I just got lucky for once:lol:

Sorry for the stupid question, but, what's the purpose of a wooden tripod?
It must be heavier, bulkier and would definitely need to be looked out for, being from wood and all. I know I had a wooden easel for painting, and it needed regular maintenance, at least once a year. Take it apart, use all sorts of chemicals on it etc etc.
And what about humidity and rain? Wont water affect the wood? I had a wooden corner window in my house that needed replacement after about 8 years because it corroded so bad that it couldn't be fixed. I ended up putting a metal frame.
It does look sturdy though!

Heavy and bulky, yes:D That's the idea. They are rock solid platforms, and absorb almost 100% of vibration which might render the picture less than sharp.

These are treated to 5 coats of varnish, not that it matters, because I will be using this almost exclusively indoor.
 
If your using it indoors you cant be getting that much vibration surely, looks nice, but cant imagine it will do anymore than a decent Manfrotto or similar????

I have to agree I can't quite see the point of a wooden tripod, bulkier and heavier surely. I'm sure there is something about it that makes it worth while but I can't see how it would be any better than a good quality regular tripod in terms of stability - especially if used indoors?

Looks nice though :)
