Does anyone know if I can change the head on this tripod? It comes with an integral ball head which is fine but not as robust as I would like. I can remove the head but that leaves me with a small top plate with an unthreaded hole in the middle and it is not obvious to me how I would mount another head.

looks like I need an AC1 column. problem is, new they cost the same as I paid for the whole tripod! Given I would also need a new ball head as well maybe I can live without.

Something like this might do, use either 1/4 or 3/8 end depending on what the new head takes and secure the other end with a suitable size nut underneath the plate http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tripod-He...065713?hash=item46580ea5f1:g:Rl4AAOSwxvxW7dnk
problem is the top of the column in my version is just a machined bit of aluminium with a lip which the tripod head clamps around (the head is in two halves and a screw tightens the two halves to lock over the lip). There is no screw hole at the top of the column (just a small casting hole) and no flat base on which the head could sit.

I think Dan has pointed me in the right direction. I had seen an advert from somebody selling the tripod with a better head but if he had the version in Dan's manual I can see how he changed it

Sorry, I thought it was just a plate with an unthreaded hole in it as you mentioned in your first post, can't really visualize what you have now

yeah, it is hard to describe. If you look at this shot you can see there is no flat plate below the ball head:

The shot is looking directly at one half of the ball head. A matching half on the other side clamps over the top of the central column from front and back rather then screwing down into the head plate on the column. I'm not sure this description helps! I'd add a photo but as I say, I think Dan's new column is the answer even if I didn't express the question well! Thanks for taking the time to help though.
