What's the benefit of an L bracket over a regular tripod adapter?

The abilty to change from landscape to portrait, without re-composing.

And in my case, it makes my camera body that little bit bigger, making it more comfortable to hold.

It keeps the weight over the center of the tripod, it keeps the camera height more closely the same, and it keeps the composition closer to the same. The last two make it somewhat quicker/easier to use.

Keeping the composition the same is a big advantage with closer distance subjects, like product shots. Saves having to move the tripod, as well as keeping it stable.

Cheers for the replies, I mostly shoot landscape stuff so would it benefit me?

I've got a L bracket grip on my X-E1. As above but can also add protection to your precious body. It'll act as a bit of a bump stop, possibly increasing the resale value.
