It keeps the weight over the center of the tripod, it keeps the camera height more closely the same, and it keeps the composition closer to the same. The last two make it somewhat quicker/easier to use.
Keeping the composition the same is a big advantage with closer distance subjects, like product shots. Saves having to move the tripod, as well as keeping it stable.
I've got a L bracket grip on my X-E1. As above but can also add protection to your precious body. It'll act as a bit of a bump stop, possibly increasing the resale value.
