Hi. I had a mk1 benbo tripod years ago and stupidly sold it. Can anyone tell me if the mk1 that is still for sale is of the same quality, only I've been told that they have changed the design. Thanks

Hope you don't mind me asking on here.

Years ago I sold a Uni-loc 2300 and would love another.

Are Benbo and Uni-loc one in the same ?

No worries :) I'm sure it will be fine, even if it's not the same as the original. It's the adaptability that I'm really after.

I had a trekker which was real solid and a great piece of equipment. The paint came off the legs which made it difficult to use.

I liked it so much that I bought another. Unfortunately it just didn't seem to be as solid, and they had added a plastic 90 degree thingie at the top of the centre column which just added wobble.

That's my experience......

I'm fairly sure the guy who started benbo sold up and started uni-loc.
I've got a uni-loc one I had totally forgotten about until last week.
Best find in the loft for quite a while.

Thanks Jerry. I think the trekker is a lighter weight version then the mk1. Shame though when great bits of kit are messed up.

I own one of the original Major 2300 tripods made by uniloc
If memory serves right these were manufactured by some former workers from the Benbo factory.
They introduced one or two improvements to the original Benbo series of tripods.
Mind you the Major which was the biggest and heaviest and was a hell of a weight.
I used mine in the studio with a Mamiya RB6x7 mounted on it.
Now it sits in the corner in it's bag unused and unneeded:'(

Trekker is actually a different piece of kit altogether. The Mk1 is solid as a rock (or was - I had one of these as well) but you wouldn't want to lug it around all day. The Trekker is lighter and more portable.

If you really value the flexibility of a Benbo save up for a Gitzo 2531EX. Now there's a fantastic tripod!

Sounds like the same beast

Benbo and Uni Loc are different companies.

When I was looking for info on these I spoke via email to Uni Loc (I forget the guys name) and found them thoroughly unhelpful despite me asking the same questions over and over...

I have a Benbo with the centre column bracket now and it's much more stable than my previous Manfrotto 055.

I've got one of the original Trekkers. I bought it in the 80s and it's still going strong. Very stable and rugged although they do take a bit of getting used to :)
