Off up Ben Nevis on a sponsored climb this weekend and cant resist taking the d200 and Tamron 17-35mm :gag:( too many photo opps although crap at lanscape!):lol: The weight wont be too bad I hope. :thinking:
Reason for the thread is just curious if anyone else has been up there and if they have any tips or pointers.We will be going up via the "Tourist" Path.
 
assuming you know what your doing in regards to the actuall climb (say if you dont)

i'd recomend taking a waterproof cover for it, so you dont have to faf about trying to keep the camera dry like i did, just let the rain come :p

defineitly lens hood and UV filter the lens, and lots of cloths inside your waterproofs, maybe even in a plastic bag because you are going to get water on the lens.

and then pray its a clear day, we just got solid rain, gutting getting to the top and the only difference is its colder wetter and windier :bonk:
 
Hope you enjoy the walk, must admit that I didn't find it the most photogenic mountain I've been up...especially compared to some of the other stunning scenery around Scotland..always worth taking the camera along though

I've heard the midges can be insane in Scotland in the summer, they even sell midge netting, not sure if accounts to BN though, might try a search myself.
 
Somebody just posted a thread on here earlier this evening about a trip up Ben Nevis. He should be able to help.

Have done lots of walking but guessing this will be my most strenuous to date!!
Not an experienced mountaineer but think we have basics covered.My ruck sack certainly feels like I do..waterproofs,various layers,compass,torch,good boots,blister kit,food and liquids to name a few.My backpack has a rain cover but was also thinking of taking some other protection for the camera.Any tips or advice appreciated.

Yeah sums my thoughts up tbh Simon but not in Scotland often so think I would kick myself If I didnt take it.
 
Thankyou..i will be taking some jungle formula extra strength so will remember not to spray the camera..:D
Seems lots of the little buggers up there

We being myself and my son (age 11) are also going up next month for charity.
To date he has climbed 13 munros (first when aged 9), lost count on corbets and he/we walked coast to coast via Hadrian's wall 86 miles in five days, backpacking last month also for charity.

Yep, i've got a midge hat.. basically a net that goes over your head. I'm camping at fort william in 3 weeks for 3 nights, so that'll be interesting :D

Oh, and one tip.. Try to take photos with no walkers in the way, or if they have to be in the photo (Due to the path) get them as a subject.

Just got back this morning,we went up the tourist path but still very very hard...got plenty of shots though and weather was nice and sunny

Walkers everywhere but tbh I just wanted some snaps its an amazing view from the summit,hard climb but worth it:cool:

With about 350 plus, on average, going to the summit in a day you were never going to get the hill to yourselves.
Glad the weather was good. Makes all the difference.
 
Glad to hear you enjoyed it and even better that you got decent weather, I did the walk in June a couple of years ago & it was busy then so not suprised to hear it's the same in August...it's one of those "must do" mountains for obvious reasons, probably only the once though ;)

Look forward to seeing a few shots

Thanks it was an experience but I hurt like hell today!

I love Fort William & Ben Nevis, but it one hell of a walk upto the top but when you get there it well worth it, met some great people at the top.

you had amazing weather compared to my climbing, wasnt even worth getting the camera out for most of it, just cloud, rain, rain, wind, rain, rain wind, wind cloud, wow a view, cloud rain, rain
 
Must admit didnt expect it to be as clear as it was and for so long..we had a small shower on way down but that was it.:cool:
