Believe It Or Not...

if you're looking to upgrade in the future then I would probably pick up a mint second hand 30D to learn on with all those new lenses. At around £300 they are a bargin in my view and would leave you with close to £1000k to spend on a couple more good quality lenses. You'd probably see more of a difference between lenses than between the 30D and 40D.

well, I was aiming to get either the 60mm or 105mm macro...the former being canon, the latter being sigma, but not sure which will get me in closest and most sharp images?

Also looking to get possibly the 10-20mm sigma,

And I need advice on best lens to get me up to 300mm as I wish to do some bird shooting... do I need to have the IS? I note the non IS versions are less than £200 while the IS ones are over...advice?

And of course, am now buying the 70-200 f4 L lens off another user.

Bear in mind the 5D is widely expected to be replaced in the next couple of months.

Yes, hence I might wait and upgrade to a 5D when that happens since prices might come down. I shall stick to the 40D for now until I get used to the system and see how I get on.

i think a lot of birding types use the canon 400mm prime. I would guess 300mm is still a bit too short and I would have thought you'd need decent tripod.

Wow, you are brave posting this thread, you will probably end up more confused.
But, talking about the head / heart thing, I recently bought a used car ( privately). My head said "its a good price, its not for you, leave it, but my heart said " you want it, you buy it. It looks good goes very well and will last years"
It broke down after 11 miles, needed a new engine and I got stick from the family for months!

Just my 2c to add to the confusion.
But, I have the D300 and it is a brilliant camera. In my opinion, it is also more aesthetically pleasing than the Canon, so that obviously makes it the better camera!! ;)

Graelwyn, I see in another thread your thinking of going the 40D route from warehouse express, might be worth looking at Jessops as for £30 more + no P&P the 40D there comes with a Canon £80 shoulder bag ("canon deluxe gadjet bag", very good quality bag) worth considering if you need a bag as well.

I was in the same situation as you last week 40D-D300, Canon won by the fact it being 50% of the Nikon price for similar specks, leaving more money for glass.

PS the L lust has started already:thinking:

Canon EOS 1DMK11N
I have a mint condition Canon 1DMKIIN for sale, and I mean mint.
It has only done around 4000 shutter actions might even be less.
It has everything that came with it in the box plus a spare battery.
I dont use it much any more as I have a 1DSMK11 and a 1DMK111 and I am thinking of selling as I want a 2nd 1DMK111 as a spare body. Sorry no offers as it's in mint condition with a low shutter count.
£1200 pick up or deliverd for £15 extra

It's human instinct to want a canon camera

go for the 40d !

Like both. 5d is much more substantial

IF you like the bigger physical size of the 5D, add the battery grip to the 40D that it sounds like you have already bought :D

Yup, I intend on doing that when I have the money... the money that was for the battery grip has been put into my change of lens choice lol.
