Belanger, product photography for Apple.

Well worth a read, and the video there is great. Thanks for sharing. What a job.

Product photography is the most under rated, most over looked genre there is. It offers immense challenges, and requires a great deal of skill and ingenuity. You have to be a problem solver as well as photographer.

Most assume you just stick a watch in a light tent, and there you go.... :) If you want an eye opener, spend some time with a good still life photographer who does a lot of product and shooting for cut out. The lighting set ups will frighten you.

Interesting link.

I totally agree with Pookeyhead. Well it had to happen some time! :D

Product photography is by far the hardest type of photography I do. I am mostly a landscape and wedding photographer but I do a lot of product too.
One of my clients makes industrial lighting. I still remember my first job for them. (I'll probably never forget it) Strip lights up to 8 feet long with mirror finish reflectors all at light spreading angles. Those buggers pick up EVERYTHING! They show the tiniest reflection.

Yes, it's one of the most demanding genres there is - very knowledge and equipment intensive, totally unappreciated by most people, but it certainly pays the bills.

I seriously had NO idea about how to do it or what was involved until I paid for some training. Definitely the way to go! I bet I could do better with £400 worth of kit and a days training than £2000 worth of kit and no training!

You however know that already ;)

"It’s just what my dad does — ignore him." Typical! :D

Very interesting article! Thanks!
