Going back nearly 20 years ago I took my son to Florida and whilst there a night time shuttle launch was scheduled. So chuck the video camera in back of the car and head to the official launch site viewing area. The commentary starts and I get the camera from the car only to find it has been recording the back of the lens cap for the last hour and low battery flashing screen. I was close to tears when luckily the launch was scrubbed with 30 secs to lift off. It was rescheduled for the following night and this time made no mistakes making sure the battery was charged, camera turned off etc so this time i managed to capture a night time launch.
