Being forgetful nearly ruined the morning

The missus has not been out for three weeks due to an operation, so this morning she decided to come out with me to the park. Me the missus and the dog were all happy to be going the park together again, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to get some photos, as it would show in the photos us being in really high spirits. Got to the park and found a really nice setting, whipped the X10 out and realised I had not put the memory card back in

I could have the option of saving to internal memory, but a measly five Jpegs or a poxy one raw just seemed a bit pointless. So I whipped out the phone, and made the best of it. Not nearly as good quality images, but I managed to capture the moment :)

PS

Surely camera manufacturers could be a little more generous with their internal memory

I have a bad habit of leaving the memory card in the PC too. What I've now started doing is leaving the card-slot door open on the camera when I put the card in the PC. That way, if I pick the camera up to put it away or whatever, I'll notice the open door and remember to put the card back in. I also carry a spare card in my camera bag, and I'm thinking of getting one to just leave in the glove compartment in my car as an emergency.Thankfully, so far the only times I've had issues when going to take a shot are when I've been taking photos around the house, so apart from cursing my forgetfulness, there've been no major disasters. :)

I see your forgotten memory card and raise you a battery left in the charger, totally ruined photo opportunity :ROFLMAO:

Having done that once, I keep a spare SD card in my wallet.

Er, where's my wallet???

And I raise you having a memory card, battery in camera and tripod.... get camera out of bag to notice oh the camera is already on! Yep I had some how managed to leave it turned on and flattened the battery

Suppose the ultimate would be going the park to photograph the missus, and leaving the missus behind :)

Short term not a bad thing but perhaps there would be longer term repurcussions

Unlike 36-on-a-roll, you do have the option to only keep the best five. You at least shot the five jpgs before switching to the phone?

I read on a blog once that the guy prevented forgetting the card by always leaving the card compartment door open until he refitted it.

Personally, I never take the card out. I connect my cameras to my pc to download my pictures.

The price of memory cards, I always have a few lying around. Often one in my wallet and a few in my bag. But I think I have done just about everything mentioned in the thread so far. Wireless triggers left switched on too.

Yes that is true I suppose and that is what I should have done, but I was mad at myself at the time and did not think things through properly. I stuffed the X10 back in my pocket in a mood, and took out my phone. But as I say I did manage to get some stuff with the phone, even a reasonable composed video ( by my standards ) so we were pleased with things after all. Not been thinking straight these past couple of weeks, got a lot of things going on, but hey don't we all :)

maybe that is what I should start doing :)

I have loads of memory cards lying on my pc desk, so I do not always notice how many though. I normally do check list before I leave the house, just feel really silly forgetting to check the card was in the camera :(

That's exactly what I have done ever since I went out with no card in my camera.

My worry there is damage to the door - it's in an exposed position.

I take the card out, fit another immediately, upload the images through card reader then keep the card separate for a while, just in case.

I tend to leave the camera battery compartment door open, when charging the battery. But the battery door, and memory card door are the same, just does not occur to me to do it when messing with the card  :$

Done the memory card thing (now leave the door open while there's no card in) and the battery thing (ditto). Also done the wrong card thing (no matter how hard you push, a CF card does NOT fit in an SD slot...) Am getting better at returning settings to my normal after (for example) going high ISO but still lapse from time to time.

I always leave the compartment door open when the card's removed - either a fresh card goes straight in and the door's shut again, or the camera is placed carefully on it's back whilst the card is downloaded and returned to the camera.

Suppose some could take whatever images their camera internal memory holds, then upload via wifi then delete images on camera and then continue shooting. The X10 does not have wifi, so no good for me. I could use a wifi card though, but I would need to remember to take it with me, but if I did remember it would defeat the object lol

Never take the card out of mine. I have however got up at silly o clock and drove 40 miles for sunrise with no battery with me:oops: :$

Updated firmware on 7d MK II and reset camera reinstated all settings except forgot to set the micro adjust for the 500mm to -8,bittern sat 30ft from hide and crept up on by a fox.Still kicking myself now.

Did I tell you about the time I shot the rigging of a tall ship? After a long time I thought "that's a surprising amount of photos" and checked. No film in the camera!

Will definitely have to remember the memory card when I take the DSLR out, as it will not take photos without the card in, my compacts will record a few to internal memory..

Left for my break in North Wales yesterday and left my Photographing North Wales book on the table. Got as far as Brecon40 mins and had to turn round!!

I think we all need to start doing a check list ;)

I got half way to London on the train the other day and realised I had left my only tripod adapter plate on a borrowed lens sat at home in the cupboard! Needless to say a replacement was sought first before any photography took place.

My photos are purely as a hobby, so no real harm done. If it is for work, forgetting gear etc could be very costly...

Same here I am purely a hobbyist. I just couldn't of taken some night time long exposures without using my tripod or I would of been ok

And I raise carrying a tripod for an hour or so and then finding the tripod head is nice and warm - at home.
I did similar, not sure I should admit this.
Carried tripod and kit to location for night shoot, started to set tripod up and noticed no adapter plate. Searched camera bag, walked back to car, searched car, searched bag again, scratched head and gave up thinking it must be at home.
Drove home, could not find it anywhere, scratched head again and gave up.
Next day got all camera gear out to check and there was the adapter plate, still on the camera...... doh!

I do occasionally leave the tripod plate attached to the camera, it soon sinks in when the camera wont rest on the table but falls over ;)

I do on some but on others it blocks the battery door. The lenses that have tripod feet have a plate almost welded to them (which is handy since it means there's usually one in the bag for when [NOT if!] I forget another...)

I bought 2 spare plates. One for my 150-600mm and one for my 70-200mm they stay fixed to the lens foot at all times - so forgetting them is not an issue

Took the Panasonic Compact to the park today, first checking of course both battery and card were inserted :) . It can manage thirteen photos stored to internal memory, if I should ever forget memory card. Saved as Jpeg, does not do RAW :(

Memory cards are so cheap (in relative terms) these days, so maybe a spare could be taped (insulating tape?) in its case to the camera strap(s) in case of memory loss.

It is very rare for me to forget my memory card, as I always do a check list before I leave home. Consisting of, Camera / Battery/ memory card, poop bags / dog lead/ phone / bag of change / keys / dog. In the old days I never forgot my rolls of film, probably because film was a big issue back in the day :)

With SSD getting bigger (Memory) and smaller (Sizewise) we await the Camera with a built in Large capacity Memory.
