I ahve a full frame 5d here.. only 3fps but at least its full frame.. anyone used one behind goals.. I ahve the trigger but never ever tried it
 
Tony I know Photodiva (Carol) shot some behind the goal for Dartford and I know it was a Canon camera, but not sure which one.
 
Not tried it myself but it should be fine if a bit slow. Watch the focus as the depth of field will be a bit shallower with the full frame sensor.
 
undecided.. seems a lot of money for what might be one good shot a match if lucky.. speaking to people who use decent setups..they say they dont get much.. but the od one they do get tends to be spectacular :)
 
Done it at few games here and there, just to try something different.
It is a lot of work for most of the times.. nothing to write home about.
But it's worth a try every now and then, keeps your mind fresh and you get another view of the game.
And you are right, when you do get a good image from there.. then it really is GOOD!

The 3fps might be to your advantage in a way that you won't get 10 pictures everytime you press the remote :-) Less to shift through after the match... of course you could set it to automatically transfer the images to your laptop as you shoot.. so you could wire them live to clients...
 
Tried it once, was happy with results and had a usage but never overly keen

camera was saved being hit by a pole that holds the goal up so its not happened again for me. I may decide to get another camera setup in the future and try it again but no real rush

PL games seem to get some coverage in them but i've not seen much more I have to say
 
its pretty expensive to setup..extra camera and wide lens.. whcih could get damaged at the games i go to.. moreso than a PL game.. prob not bother after all ..

On the smaller grounds wouldn't dare to give this a try.. you're too far from the camera yourself.. and the crowd is too close ;-)
But - you should give it a go at least once..
Doubt you'll get many pics from it - but as said, the ones that are good.. they are VERY good.
 
Remotes are great but a bit time consuming to set them and pack after the game and sort out photos.

Remember the most important goal of the football season 2011/2012 when S. Aguero scored title winning goal for Man City? There was a remote photo of that goal all over in papers!

While at Carlisle Utd friendly i misses a goal - focus sliped on the background so didn't use that photo. Remotes saved my day because I had the goal covered :-)

That photo was taken with ancient Canon 20D and it's kit lens 18-55mm at 18mm then cropped. Ok, sunny evening helped a lot.

I tried remotes at 3 previous games and I'm very keen on using them more. Not as good results, but have a look:

I'm trying it at the moment. I use 2x Canon 20D for remotes, the kit lens 18-55 and Sigma 18-50 both at 18mm, each set close to a different goal post.
I have the whole goal from left to right and a bit on the sides covered with those 2 remotes :-) Extra gear to carry, but great to use.
Probably nobody else uses 2 remotes, unless big game, but I don't care. Happy with my idea and I'm glad to see it working.

Kipax, I might be at Carlisle v Blackburn match so I could show you my remote set up, but not sure yet.

I ahve given up on the idea.. for the low end games i work at its too dangerous... its also too expensivfe to setup for the couple of times i might be able to use it... Hve a 5d here i could get cheap.. but then i dont have a wide angle..35m is my widest..so would need camera and lens.. On refelction...not worth it :(

appreciate the input from everyone.. maybe wasted all your time :)

You could chain the camera to a post or to an advert board ;) Little chain puts pottential thieves off, if they know how to deattach the lens and would try to still a lens only... remember an old kit lens would even do

I'll have to do that again, no chance for me to go to Carlisle Utd games :(

A mini tripod, cheap yongnuo triggers and maybe that little chain protection would cost you £70 maybe. Add your 35mm or the cheapest wide angle for 5D and you could try yourself.

If you don't need to keep a full frame camera you could sell 5D and for the price you could get a cheap 20D, kit lens and everything else for remotes and still keep some cash in your pocket :thumbs: Or invest in a 50D which has better available ISO than 20D.

Don't give up with remotes, they're good fun and could add to your photography

I have the yongnuo triggers and a gorrila thingy tripod.... might take it all to newport this sat and try.. hmm :)
 
all setup.. gonna give it a try sat if enough room at newport... I am either gonna be hooked or hate it.

guessing at settings...

manual focus around 5 feet from goaline towards pitch... but what mode.. for changing light? thinking Tv to get the all important shutter and let the camera figure the aperture accordingly..

just guessing here
 
I've got my triggers now so might give it a try as well with my 40D behind goal. Fingers crossed and look forward to sharing results with you Tony :)

I've got the 603's I had thought that they only worked to fire flash guns remotely. Can you tell me how you would set them up to remotely fire an actual camera? :thinking:

Tv to get the right shutter.. the aperture changing is IK but cant afford the shutter to drop too much

ISO best i can.. probaly 800 on a 5d full frame.. anyone know ?

over expose by 1 fulll stop because half the pic will have sky in it


does the above sound about right?

You cannot use 603's as a camera remote unless your willing to sit & press the button!!. You need 602's for a shutter trigger. Kind regards Graham
 
Hi. I do manual focus (focus on the penalty box line) set the aperture to f4 or f5.6 if the light's good enough. Set the shutter speed to 1/800 and ISO to get a decent exposure. Depends on the light. Changing light is a bu**er. I use a 50D and a 10-22 as I happen to have it and don't use it for much else. Never yet (touch wood) had a problem with home fans, although some of the away games I've been advised to put it down the other end from the 'home' fans. Only had it knocked by a stray ball once so far. Have to make sure there is enough room behind the goal, Insure it. I wouldn't risk a 5D and an expensive lens. Seen the shots on the TV Premier League - cameras get bounced regularly (too close to the net?).

5d is worth about 375 quid.. all my gear is insured

manual focus and iso...so presume your in av mode?.. do you over expose for the sky?

No, Manual Mode. Never tried AV mode for this - may be I should? Usually expose using the grass. Often make changes half time. Foodlight is better, its all the same!
 
Ok, I've just purchased another D2h to use as a remote camera!, I'd already bought the rest of the set up last year including a bloody dear rain cover :eek:, but just couldn't bring myself to use a D3 as a target :D.

I won't be able to show any examples though!, given DATACO rules. But, I'll take on board all info supplied from you guys :thumbs:. Kind regards Graham.

When you put it down just pull the net back to make sure you have decent clearance and it wont hit the camera if a ball goes there.
 
Well... Just back.. Have to say I am well pleased... I have a few usable.. two of which are good clear goal shots...

I had three commisions for the game so am hopefull something gets published from behind the goals.. pretty sure at least one will..

I will be putting the pics on my website so you will be able to see mine :)

Only thing is.. the 5d is full frame.. along wiht the widest I ahve..35m ..it was too short.. had to put the camera about 20 feet back.... absolouitly loads of room at newport :)

so I need a wider lens if I continue.. the 3fps on the 5d didnt hinder...

I ahve to take into account it was a loverly sunny day...on tv mode at iso 800 it was giving my f 11 and f13 which is always gonna be good haha.. so I know I wont always be so lucky... but cant try again until i get a wide angle... 10-20 or 17-40 hmm

thats a 1.6 crop.. so if i used a 7d also a 1.6 and thats a siggy 10-22 ? is it a good combo yours.. do you find the pics ok with that 10-22 ... publishable?

Kipax - how about the samyung 14mm. I have one for my 5d mk3. At f8 for about 6 feet distance you get focus from 2 foot to infinity. Fully manual so just set and shoot. I paid £265 for mine new.

hhm that looks like your a few feet back....do you need a fair bit of room?

its the camera i am wondering about.. looking for somehting with more pixels so i can crop and work... yer never going to get all the focus you want so the bigger the MP the more editing you can do to make lok good i presume :) just wondering if a 1.6 crop is too long... theres a battered 7d going cheap but 1.6 hmmmm

well league paper used a cut down pic of the goal.. aaargh with a leg sticking in from right :( a tiny player/manager cele.. and near back page a player sommersaulting and they chopped him off at wrists and ankle... good grief... the only pic they did good was one from june.. james beattie holding scarf up...

I think behind goals shots may be too wide for most usage.. more for big stories and double page shots.. well 2 more papers to go.. monday and thursday so lets see what they use :)

No sport images but I've one taken in York minster a couple of weeks ago.
I was sat about 2 feet away, next to the bloke on the left, but it give you an idea of width.

The very wide shot was at a rugby ground used for footie. There was plenty of deadball space so I experimented with a wider view.

There's a half-metre walkway and about another half-metre+ of grass behind the goal. I usually set the tripod up on the grass as far as I can get from the net. That close the 10-22 works quite well, but any longer focal length would mean just a fraction of the net in view. Its out of reach of the ball flying into the net. Had a few near misses with players belting past behind the net after scoring, but so far no accidents! Its 'close' to the fans, but honestly haven't had a problem. They'd have to climb over the barrier to reach it and if they are a noisy bunch the site stewards are usually present. The plastic bag gives it visibility and a bit of protection from water etc.

well i got one remote pic published in my local regional newspaper today... you can see mine at www.kipax.com the newport game.. it was massivly bright sunny and hard work :(

I thought newport_accy_52.jpg was the best as it shows him shooting but they used newport_accy_53.jpg

got 3 pics in that paper.. 3 pics in league paper and one in todays SUN newspaper but only the one behind goals.. but stil local paper to come on thursday...

not bad for a league 2 game :)
