Currently got the kit 18-55 IS and EF 80-200 4.5 -5.6

Christmas coming and all that, looking to buy meself a pressie and justify spending more money.

For a beginner I was wondering how much difference between these for general walkabout lens but an improvement on what I have.

Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens
or
Canon EF 75-300mm F4.0-5.6 III, Canon EF 75-300mm F4.0-5.6 USM III

Does the IS make that much difference?

I'd expect better results than the 80 - 200? (it was only £40 posted)

At some point I'd like to start some family portraits etc and probably give nifty a go.

The 55-250mm is a gem of a lens

Not only does the IS make a difference with slower shutter speeds, the lens is remarkably sharp considering it's price point.

Neither of the 75-300mm lenses you listed are much to write home about - Canon have two types of USM motor and the lens you listed uses the lower spec version. I really don't think you would be disappointed with the 55-250mm

I'd go for the Canon 55-250 IS. I love mine. I haven't heard a good word about any of the canon 75-300's.

If you could stretch to the price of a 70-300 IS, then I guess that'd be the one to go for.

There is a "budget telephoto" lens review in this months "Digital Camera" magazine. The 55-250is scores highly.

There is also the Sigma 70-300 DG OS, which I know nothing about. The normal Sigma 70-300 APO Macro doesn't get great reviews, but maybe the OS version is better.

I'll admit they are longer than I would look at for walkabout.
I would be looking at the 18-135 or 28-135 most likely the later if sticking to that range of lenses.

Out of the two you listed I would prefer the 55-250 as it has had better reports than the older 75-300, the newer 70-300IS however is sharper than both those

I also rate the 55-250 but don't use it as a walkabout lens. You lose too much on the bottom end.

A 17-85mm is a good walkabout lens - certainly a step up from the 18-55mm kit lens

Yeah, just noticed the 75-300 is older lens, new ones are 70 - 300 IS?

Thanks for replies so far by the way.

Suppose I'm looking to improve on the 80-200 cheapo I've got.
