Hi,

I enjoy photography as a hobby and I currently have a pretty lame digital camera (FujiFilm Finepix S3000) and it is limiting me to what I can do.

So I have decided I am going to buy a D-SLR. Even though I am a beginner, I don't want to get a real entry level D-SLR, as if I really get into this, it will probably mean replacing the entry level camera at a later date. Therefore, I rekon if I get something decent, I won't have to spend more money on a new camera with a good few years.

I have seen the Canon 450D with 18-55mm lens, canon bag, 1GB card and a 58mm UV filter for £450 after canon £50 cash back.

I will be doing more research into it and looking at different kits, but would something like the kit listed above be good for me as a beginner. I like taking landscapes and don't really do much stuff that requires a macro lens.

Opinions please?

Thanks,
Matt :)

Have a look at obtaining a D200 that will give you plenty of scope to learn and grow.

From what I've heard, you could do a lot worse, but I thought you didn't want an entry level DSLR? The 450D is just that.
Is it? Wow I didn't know that. I thought there was like 400D, 350D and 300D below it?

I am new to this and purchased a 450D about a month ago. It's a great camera, and I am enjoying learning using it. But ......... All in all, it's just an entry level camera. If you don't want an entry level then look beyond this.

If I carry on enjoying this - Still not 100% sure, so all boxes etc kept incase I need to sell!! - I will be looking at upgrading at some time.

This is an expensive hobby, only limited by your pocket and imagination!

The best thing to do is go to work out your budget, go to a camera shop and handle all the cameras you're interested in and see which one feels and looks the best to you and make your decision that way.

I have started with a 400D and it has been great i have had it for just about a year now.
It is a bit plasticy but the 350D is the same but is a slightly better camera than mine.

I want to get the 40D as i feel the 400D is limiting me now and there are some features i need the 400D has.

remember to budget for your lenses and accessories. I have spent 3x the cost of my 400D in a year.

hey iv only just started out in photography also and i got the canon 400d its cheaper than the 450 but i like it just as much, i got the 18-55mm is lens with it and the battery grip i would def recommend the 400 because though it is an entry level cam its got loads of tricks and i wouldn't trade mine in even for a 450 lol good luck choosing

If your emphasis is going to be on landscape and other static subjects then I think the 40D will not offer you any real advantage over the 450D.
Any saving would be better put towards a good lens, filters and tripod.

Personally, I'd aim to pick up a decent secondhand body and lens and move on from there.

I bought a 450D a week ago and for an entry level piece of kit, I think it's fantastic.
As well as the 18-55mm kit lens, I also took the offer with a Tamron 70-300mm lens and 4gb card.
Today my nifty fifty arrived as well.
I can't recommend this camera high enough.
I could sit here all night raving about the 450D because it's an ideal purchase for anyone who is venturing into the world of DSLR's for the 1st time.

thats great but if he starts with an entry level camera he,ll be doing just what im doing now looking for a new one in less than a year

I went from a Fuji 500 to a 350d kit plus a 28-200 USM, really enjoyed the learning curve until I could afford better.
