I'm looking to get into strobe stuff with my 5d, and there's no way I could really afford to start or expand a Canon setup, so I've been looking at the alternatives.

I think I'd like to have e-TTL on at least the on-camera flash, but for serious stuff with more lights I'm happy doing it in manual.

I have been recommended Yongnuo, but don't know enough about the tech or brands to commit to buying it straight away.

Would an RF-603, YN-468 and YN-560 be a good start/compatible?

What's your total budget?

For the off-camera flashguns, all you need is manual control of the power output, and a reasonable guide number if you intend throwing light from distance (for close-up stuff just about any gun will do). Most of the Yongnuo ones fit this bill but of course, you get what you pay for; in the case of Yongnuo it seems to be that its guns are good VFM.

'603 triggers are very reasonable and perform well. I use Phottix Stratos, which are a bit more expensive (but with better build). 603s are great starter triggers for very little money.

Don't know about TTL flashguns from Yongnuo - there are quite a few but I'm not up on the specs - but some people also recommend the Sigmas and the Jessops ones on a budget.

I use optical slave wherever possible, which is free dependant on your flashes. Got some cheap triggers off eBay, they are OK but if you knock them they set the flash off, annoying when you have them dangling down.

Hmmm with the exception of being able to fire 2 flashes with one receiver unit, I don't see much of an advantage of using that over using the RF-603s? Especially given you could buy more RF-603s to trigger the extra flashes and still have money left over. I don't see ETTL or anything similar in the description?

Also with regard to my OP, I ended up ordering the YN-560 and RF-603s, but will wait until I can afford the YN-565 for an on-camera/second flash, so that a) the flash power is consistent and b) I have ETTL on the on-camera; it took my dim mind a few minutes of pondering to realise they don't make a YN-468 for the 5D

just bought a nissin flash with built in slave of my mates camera shop for 130 will do a review on it soon in the techy section soon just meens i can use it on my canon then take it of and use with 430ez and slave.
