Hi, well am newish too photography and am needing help ..I have the Sony alpha a390 and the flash I have is a jessops 360afd and am wantin too if anyone could tell me what I would need as in equipment so I can use my flash off my camera!!..I don't have any cables etc and I would really be grateful for any help 

Thanks becca 

Hi cheapest way is to get some wireless flash triggers plenty if sets available on eBay, but remember to check they are Sony fit as the Sony hotshoe mount is different to anyone else. You will have to shoot with the fladh in manual mode as there will be no meetering info from the camera

Hi billybob99..thank u for the info/advice it's always very useful!!..one more question tho and sorry for sounding thick hehe....the triggers ?..how do I know which too buy ie will they work with my dslr and flash as I was unsure if just any worked etc!..thanks again becca

Sony-fit triggers are quite hard to find, most sellers won't stock them as the demand is quite low, however you can buy adapters that fit on your camera hotshoe and your Sony-fit flashgun to allow the use of triggers designed for "normal" cameras.

As above that's what I've got I'm sure I bought them from you ordinary trigger with a convertor works fine the reciever I've got has 2 ends 1 Sony 1 normal

Yup, not sure if many people sell those triggers as they're (when you pay full price) quite expensive, the adapters are cheap enough though.....

Go on the phottix store - they sell Sony-fit triggers. The Strato is a very good trigger; well made and reliable at ranges up to 100mm by my testing..... don't know what other triggers they do in Sony-fit... :)

EDIT: this link takes you to the Strato kit - drop the menu down for the Sony option :)

An alternative way is to buy a camear flash and manually set the exposure power to the lowest. You can use that flash to trigger other studio flashes, and the flash from your camera flash won't effect the whole lighting system as it's not powerful enough but still can trigger the other equipments.

Bear in mind the Jessops flash has a built-in optical slave, so you can set it off with the other flash without the need for any additional triggers.....

Unless you can disable preflash on the 390 you'll have difficulty using it wirelessly without triggers

hi flash in the pan..built-in optical slave??...i only have one flash tho!..becca

Hi Becca
Preflash, when using the inbuilt flash it fires a small flash which it then registers how much light will be needed for the image to be correctly exposed then the flash fires again with the correct amount of light, this all happens so quickly you may not of noticed, try setting camera on manual in a darkish room set shutter to 1/2 sec and aperture f11 and fire from waist level and you will see the flash fires twice (flash on).
Optical slave, the jessops flash has a sensor that when set on slave when it sees another flash it fires itself at whatever power you set, the problem I've had with two Sony bodies is that even when camera is set to use wireless flash which it sends out a low flash which shouldn't effect the picture but would set of any flashes "looking" for a signal to fire it uses a preflash ie flashes twice and sets the jessops flash too early and results in underexposed images. Hope this else feel free to contact me if I can help
