Been up all night... feeling sooooo guilty... :(

Just read this thread for the first time.

So sorry to hear about your dog mate. Hope she makes as good a recovery as she can.

But as Marcel said earlier, do not blame yourself - accidents do happen. You have probably done something like that 100's of times before with no worries!!!!

Thoughts with you all, and especially Heather!!

Me too. I've had dogs for most of my life and I feel for all of you. As many people have said, though, they are so resiliant and Belle probably doen't feel like jumping about too much just now, which will give her muscles and ligaments time to settle down again. If TLC can pull her through, then I know that's what she'll get loads of.

Thinking of you all. Jean

Update on Tuesday 23rd.

Well, well, well.... would you believe it... Belle isn't quite strutting around as though nothing happened, but she is strutting around quite well. I am stunned, totally stunned. She is limping, and does find it harder to get around, but she IS getting around.

She is not off her food, and is quite active which is a delight to see. I am wary of her climbing up to her perch on the window sill and I always help her up and down there - but I am delighted to report that she seems to be doing sort of OK.

My heart stopped earlier today though when she once again fell off the sofa arm whilst climbing up... I missed her jumping onto the sofa and heard a clunk... she tottled out from the side of the sofa as if to say... it's Ok, I'm OK.!! The vet showed us her X-rays yesterday as well, and he explained that he was very suprised at the overall good condition of her pelvis and hip joints. He was expecting them to be much worse - so that's some good news.

On another matter - her sugar levels are all over the place though and the reading yesterday on her blood test was unmeasurable!! The vet has increased her daily insulin dosage and we have to take her back for another reading on Friday.

So.. Belle... the dog like a cat with 9 lives!!!

Great news hopes she make a full recovery

Really pleased to hear she's doing well!

Feeling for you & the poor dog. Sorry I cannot add more

Good news that she seems to be recovering well from her accident. Given that she has had some sedation/anaesthetic, it may take a little while for her blood sugars to settle down, just as it would in humans.

Glad to hear she's up and about .

Agreed - it takes ages to flush all that crap out of the system - humans can feel crappy for months after major surgery, so dogs probably do as well...

Hi, How is the little one today?

Glad she's keeping well :)
Have you forgiven yourself yet?
Not really, well not 100% anyhow. It was my fault even though it was totally unintentional and I will always feel a little guilty. The relief though, is palpable... :)

Hi, How is the little one today?

Unbelievable really... she is definitely a dog with nine lives I can say that. She's gorgeous!!

Thanks all for your concern and for asking of her, I know she'll be grateful... hehehehe

Just read this - so sorry to hear about her, but glad she's on the mend (((hugs)))

Glad to hear that Belle is back home and doing well.

p.s. isn't there just something amusing about the expression of dogs coming round from anesthetic?

This is Meg just after we brought her home from the vet having needed stitches in a badly cut paw.

(apologies for the crappy shot - cameraphone in low light really isn't up to much!)

Really sorry I missed this thread John & hope you & Belle are coping ok.
Cavalier King Charles spaniels are built like miniature tanks mate (I know mine is!!) - you really shouldn't blame yourself for the fall, you can't wrap them up in cotton wool all of the time & I'm sure she wouldn't want you to treat her any differently just because she's getting on a bit.
Give her a fuss from me (& my girlfriend too as I can guarantee she won't stop asking me to find out how she is as soon as she hears about this)

I missed this too but I'm glad I saw it when she's on the up :) Dogs have an amazing capacity for recovery, keep spoiling her :)

Update: Belle is simply amazing... she really does have 9 lives!

She's recovered I'd say almost fully from her accident when she dislocated her hip a few weeks ago and is busily growling at the puppies when they venture near her!

Her sugars are a little all over the place at the moment and the vet can't identify what it might be that's causing such a spread of readings. We're giving her loads of fuss and attention, and she loves it... so much so that I reckon she's learned to control her own glucose levels so that she gets attention...:)

Thanks for the support folks, I too am feeling a lot happier about my causing her to lose balance and slip.

Update: she's still going strong!!

Spotted this thread whilst searching for something else and thought I'd pop an update here for those who were interested before.

Belle is doing fine, getting older of course, slowing down month by month... but gulping her food down, always snoring loudly, her blood sugars are stable, her hip has healed very well and caused no ongoing issues... she's a star really, I don't know where she gets her resilience from.

holy thread revival batman

congrats, glad to hear she is going strong:thumbs:

Thats good news! Glad she's still ticking along :)

Just seen this thread for the 1st time, and I can only imagine how difficult it must have been at first. Your wee dog is a fighter and clearly as strong as an ox!

Our KC is only 7 months old, and we are 100% in love with him. My aunts dog, a golden retriever is 18, poor thing. It is definately on it's last legs but has had an absolutely magnificent kick at the ball.

Keep us all updated, and get some more pics up! She is lovely.

Gary.

Accidents as they say do happen-just take care of her and she will be ok im sure.

Pets are a worry like kids-but they are so worth having.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but up until last weekend, Belle has been sort of OK. She's slowed down of course, but still manages to get out in the garden for short walks around, and a change of scene. Her bloods have been relatively stable too (for those who are not aware, Belle is insulin dependent and we inject her twice a day).

However, she's taken a turn for the worse over these last few days, and has been back to the vets for diagnosis. Her blood sugars are OK, her temp is OK, and all seems in order generally - but the vet says she thinks there is something 'suspect' going on, and wants to see her for some more detailed blood tests. Personally, I think it might be the same as what took our other beloved Cavalier 2 years ago ie. kidney failure. So, Belle is off to the vets for the day, and though I hope not, I feel we might be facing the inevitable later this afternoon. Will update later.

GOOD LUCK :(

Fingers crossed everything turns out to be a false alarm.

Hey buddy

I hope she is ok, she sounds like a fighter!

:( I do hope she's okay - best of luck.

I really hope everything will be ok!

(I am hopeful your little one will be ok, my 10yr old rabbit, who has just pulled through after a second stroke, is now bouncing about like there was nothing ever wrong! You just never know! )

Hi All

Well, we've just had the call from the Vets and I'm afraid it is the worst of all outcomes. Belle has finally succumbed to one of the ailments relating to her diabetes, and she has catastrophic kidney failure - the same finality as became her lifelong companion two years ago, Jessie.

So, a few deep breaths from me and Heather at 4:00 today when we say our last goodbyes.

I have to say, when I was present at the time Jessie was put down - it broke my heart and the pain was palpable. Not looking forward to the rest of the afternoon, especially for my little girl Heather.

:(

I am so sorry, thinking of you, x x x

You have my greatest sympathy my friend

Thanks LB, appreciated.

You have my greatest sympathy my friend
And my thanks to you too MJ, also appreciated.
Gutted :(

Anything we can do to help, I dunno just ask.

Gary.
... and also to you too Gary, what a lovely offer, you're a top fella - thanks.

What we're going to do is take a few final shots of Belle this afternoon as we don't really have that many because she doesn't accompany us on the walks with the other dogs as she couldn't cope with the effort required. So, as she is currently on a drip, and as soon as this drip is removed the failure in the kidneys is exacerbated and causes her to be slowly poisoned, we only want her to be off the drip for a short time. We will take her for a final little stroll around the grounds of the vet surgery and I'll try to get a few last shots of her.

Gary - if I post them, perhaps you can pretend they're good ones eh... :)

Thanks so much all.

When you have a pet, for the Burns' especially a dog, I can honestly say when the time comes... it hurts, and it hurts tremendously. She's been a part of our family for just over 14 years, and because of her condition we have lavished lots of care and tenderness on her especially (a) over the last few years of her life due to her insulin dependent diabetes, and (b) after her companion died two years ago. Sorry if I am babbling folks... I just don't want to tell Hev, so if I babble here now for 10 mins, perhaps I will be a little stronger for her when she comes home from shcool.

Will tell the tale later if interested.

How absolutely awful for you. Will be thinking of you this afternoon. Hope her last moments are peaceful.

My Springer was nearly 15 and on his last legs when I took him to the vets, but it was emotional torture and I still feel like I murdered him.

It's probably the best thing for Belle, but that's no consolation to you today of course. I hope it goes as well as these things can mate. :(
