Well the missus has now realised her 1 Series Beemer boot isn't big enough, so time for a new car. Now she wants a 5 door, for dogs etc. Hatches are probably not big enough, but she doesn't like Estate cars. Although if you jack them up in the air like 4x4's that is OK :nut: So we've been off testing some 4x4's & I thought I'd share my 1st thoughts.

BMW X5 3.0D Sport Auto - I loved it...the missus thought it was too big....& to be honest new prices are way too much

VW Tourag 2.5TDI Auto - Very impressive, but slow vs BMW. Missus won't test drive an Auto...wants a manual.....can't get a demo of a manual anywhere. End of story.

Toyota RAV Diesel 180 - Having had a XT3 Diesel before the Beemer, we were expecting good things. It's much bigger now. Unfortunately came away dissappointed. The diesel still sounds like a tractor under acceleration & the road noise from the run flat tyres was unbearable....shame....it was the cheapest :(

BMW X3 2.0D - Off to drive tomorrow. The missus likes the look & size of this car, but I don't like the look vs X5.....plus it's darn expensive. Will see tomorrow.

Must admit though every time we get back in the missus 1 Series sport, I find it hard to justify the extra money......cars !!!! :banghead:

What else did you expect after buying that new bike ;)

Wife loves her Nissan Navara

Porsche Cayenne 4x4 ???

God that is an ugly car, chap at work had one for a while, in grey, blurgh!

cant be doing with 4x4, chap over the way from me has one and takes up half the road, 2 spaces and takes peoples paint off when he goes out in it.

You need to learn the old Jedi mind trick, ' you dont need a 4x4, you want a volvo V40 estate.....'

I went on a posh pheasant shoot once and a guest turned up in a brand new Discovery which got stuck on flat ground in less than a foot of mud. Just to add to the overall indignity, he was towed out by a Bedford Rascal. :laugh1:

My boss has the V8 version of this in Black. Not the prettiest outside, but lovely interior.

Should have said, it would have to be a diesel if 4x4 for the economy. Did try out a freelander back 2 years ago, but the reliability problems & depreciation made us choose the RAV

Does make me larf the anti 4x4 lobby. My RAV used to do 38mpg (more than 1 series curently) plus was less CO2. Then size wise most 4x4's are same length & width as most cars...eg Mondeo etc.

Now if the rant mob bothered to read a bit & educate themselves, they would be chasing either the big petrol engine cars / vans etc, or maybe even the old clapped out cars some of them drive...eg old beetles, Morris Minors etc, which produce a lot more pollution.....rant over ;)

I'm sure my bike is very efficient ;)

DOh....BMW have made a mistake & given me a X3 3.0D M Sport to drive instead of the 2.0D.......gits.....it absolutely flies !!!! but 4k extra for bigger engine !!!! Already been on Broadspeed to see how cheap you can get an UK spec version for...seems about £2k less. Back off to play ;)

I did wonder ;)...although it was an Auto again, missus drove it but didn't feel in control in the corners with an Auto vs Manual.

My thoughts were best/most car like handling of the lot so far. Build quality is so far superior to the Toyota yesterday. That 3.0D engine is a belter. The M Sport kit is really needed to make the car look decent.

So far if money wasn't such an issue I personally would have the X5. For the money with £4K off list with Broadspeed I would have the Toerag ;). The RAV isn't up to the job. The X3 is what the missus would like. So for the mo will have to arrange test drive of X3 2.0D M Sport manual.

At least now you'll know if the 3.0 is worth the difference.

Sneaky blighters those BMW dealers!
