Been sugested my 300f4 is soft

OK. I have done this test. - All images shot this morning - on a tripod - No processing at all done so far - just converted to 800pixel jpeg straaight from DPP.
The + & - figures are relevant to lens adjustments using the canon settings. I've picked three from each set. Many thanks for any help.

rather than convert to 800pixels, you should crop to 800 pixels. youve lost a lot of detail per shot and probably hidden anything unsharp unless it is particularily bad

Moving to equipment. In depth critique is for comments on a picture not a lens!

:agree:

tell us on which part of the lens AF is set to and make a 100% crop of this part.

All at ISO 400 - spot metering - F7.1

1 = standard

2 = set lens at +2

3 = set lens at -2

id go with no 2 out of the set, i would try the settings at smaller intervals though, form 0 to +2.

to be fair though, unsharpened raw, that looks ok to me. have you sharpened it?

Sorry, yes, the last three images are sharpened to no 10 (max) using DPP.

#1 for me
How does it look on +1 ?
My 50 F1.4 wasnt too sharp when I got it, but by using microadjust I made it nice and sharp :)

Oh and dont use sharpen tool, and can we see crops shot at F4 ?

All with NO sharpening.....

Did you switch the IS off before taking?

I used to get very soft images if I shot with my 24-105 IS with the IS on mounted on a tripod.

Oh, no, my IS was on during these shots, set to position 1.

at F4 #2 for me...
There are two sliders for sharpening in DPP if i remember right...one that goes to 10 and other to 255 or something like this...i find the first one useless but second works just fine...

Only 1 slider in the RAW section
There is a JPEG slider too, but I was advised not to use both and you are going into the relms of over sharpening..

If No.2 is the best - I should try shooting with micro adjustment of +2 for this lens......

Im not used to DPP soI dont remember all those settings, will have a look once I get home.

To be honest, I would expect a prime L lens to be sharp at its max F...
mine 200 is sharp, and has no need to microadjust:)

do a test shot without IS as well

sep, have you got anything not rounded for the test as well, just a thought. like a memory card or such like. on tripod, no IS 100% crop. also set micro adjustment to 0 +1 and +2

As suggested. Thanks to everyone so far.....

The Micro adjustments can be made just for individual lenses
They are in the camera under the C.FnIII - Autofocus/Drive settings.....

+2 is the better but there still not as good as they should be with your prime lens.

+2 for me as well i think. not that much in it though in truth...

I just adjusted my 70-200L to -30, 0 and +30 and can't see any difference... :(

Compared to what I'm used to with my own Nikon 300mm f/4 everything looks really really soft.

I think AF fine tune is helping a bit, but not really papering over the cracks.

TBH the lens looks pretty horrid to my eyes...

Just been ouside for the last hour - to see if I could photograph a bird with the adjustment on the lens of +2. Not a single bird turned up... But this little fella did.... What do you think? It's got Raw sharpening of 8, and that's it.
