Looking to get some wardrobes for our bedroom - only issue is no long straight wall that will allow a long wardrobes - one wall joins onto a short wall (400mm) due to an alcove, and the other suitable wall has a chimney breast (approx 1500) with alcoves on each side (approx 1000 wide, 350 deep).

Looking at ikea to start, but it looks like if we put deep wardrobes in the alcoves and a shallower wardrobe on the chimney breast, there will be gaps between and the wardrobe on the chimney breast will also stand proud by around 150.

What have people done in similar circumstances - can you put some wood trim to cover the gaps? How much to get a carpenter in to build frames and buy doors separately?

Common sense says that removing the chimney breast to allow a straight run will be too expensive.

I think you need to bear in mind the width of an adult coat/jacket on a hangar is about 500mm. The depth of my Ikea 'Pax' wardrobe is about 600mm inc doors.

Could you perhaps site units either side of the chimney breast and fit a 'decor panel' or shelves etc over the cb to make up the difference in depth, i.e. 250mm?

Would this be a possibility, Phil?

You could have three top bars (2 in the alcoves and 1 on the chimney breast) and configure the uprights and hanging rails, shelves, baskets as you want.

In front of this set up could be a frame with sliding doors.

The gaps you are talking about are normally filled with a 'fill panel' cut to just the right size.
You probably have one or two in your kitchen which you don't notice...

As above, I would be inclined to keep the run in one line. It would look better. Shelves fitted behind a door would be the best option for the middle section.
A cut down unit could be used, but you have to know what you are doing and cut very accurately. If in doubt, call a reputable joiner.

Thanks all - went to ikea and was pleasantly surprised that i could get wardrobes that fitted the alcoves and in front of the chimney breast without losing to much space. Those in the alcoves will need to come away from the wall about 120mm.

I'll likely get an extra door and a carpenter in to finish of the fitting - get them spaced evenly from the wall and add the fill panel,

Heres a plan:

If you go for the sliding doors, I'd highly recommend the soft close option. With this and the wardrobe secured to the wall it is a good quality unit.

I spent the extra few quid and filled all of the holes inside too so there aren't any drillings to be seen when opened.
