We had a rather tragic death in our family recently, and the one good thing to come out of it is that as he was signed up to be an organ donor, he's saved 5 adult lives and will make a born-blind baby see....

It's an awesome thing to do imho, so please, if you fancy it but have never bothered, please please please follow the link and do your bit!

Takes five minutes....

Sorry for your very sad loss Already a donor but agree more should be

I'm a donor according to my driving licence (which I think was an epic idea because it means so many more people know how and have a 0 effort opportunity to join)

eyes might be alright but I'm a bit fat smoke and drink so not sure how much benefit the rest is

Not a donor yet but once I shuffle off this mortal coil, I hope that as many people as possible get given parts of me that are less knackered than theirs, although I have a feeling that my internals may not be as much of a boon as I would like them to be... (Fat, ex-smoker and ex-heavy drinker. Eyes may be OK though and I suppose ma swolen liver may feed more people than a "normal" one would! {Hell, I'll be dead and if anyone wants a slice, they'll be welcome!])

I've carried a donor card for a long time and as I am now 64 I wonder if they will want any of the parts - which if they do, they are welcome to have them.

On the other hand, I have signed up to donate my brain to the Parkinsons Society (who could resist the siren call of Jane Asher when she did the adverts for them?). They will be happy to have it regardless of the condition, although I do realise they will have to find it first!

Here is the link if anyone is interested... http://www.parkinsons.org.uk/research/parkinsons_brain_bank.aspx

how do you go about donating your body to medical science - that'd be epic

that's what most donor bodies go to (can't remember the actual figures) but on average just under 2 organs get used for transplant due to restraint on demand/transport times and priority - if someone wants a heart or liver then that gets given first and only if kidneys/corneas are viable after this time do they get given from memory.

I think donation should be assumed and then you can opt out - this way the many people who don't feel too strongly, or never get round to registering, can help others.

Very sorry for your loss - been a donor since I got my drivers license at 17.

Even if the use of my body parts allows for someone else to have one more day with their loved ones, it's worth it.

Sorry for your loss. I also have carried a card since I passed my driving test in oh 1977.

Think I was signed up already but just in case... done.

So sorry to hear about your loss. I've carried the card for about 20 years and keep trying to tell others too. Blood donors is another thing. Every little helps. It's not until it's personal that you realise how important it is.

I don't agree. The key is the word donor, as in donation for me. It is a personal decision and a gift. There should not be coercion to make people give.

As a matter of interest, here is the link to the Parkinson's Disease Society mentioned in my earlier post...

it's actually quite complex as i found out

in Scotland there is a body [groan] that you can contact to arrange collection and shipping to any University College of Medicine

well,I have ticked all the boxes.... if I am dead, they can have any part of me, but not the camera.......:nono: no way am I having a precious pentax lens being forced to copulate with a whatever body! I don't care if it can be done with sticky back plastic, a paperclip and chewing gum, ain't going to happen! ;)

'I think' in England you just put it on your drivers licence what organs you would be willing to donate

How does an opt out system coerce people?

It is a personal decision - you can decide not to donate

Failing to see the problem

true but if you donate your whole body it can used, after removal of viable organs for transplant, by Medical schools to teach people the skill of surgery

of course my liver would be totally rejected...:lol:

you dont do it on your Driving License

there's an organisation that picks up your "body" and transports to the Uni Medical Hospital

google body donation or something

Thank you to everyone for your comments, both on here and via PM.....

It's lovely that some people have signed up to be a donor, thanks loads, you've potentially just saved a lot of lives!!

The caption underneath the picture is wrong (typical local rag :bonk: ) as that's actually a photo of Mark not "Selina Baillie and her brother"! But here's a link to the story of Mark and his crash: http://www.eveningnews24.co.uk/cont...ory=xNews&itemid=NOED12 May 2010 07:27:56:700

Thanks again everyone!!
