Hi all,

I hope everyone had a brilliant xmas and will have an even better new year!! :))

I was hoping for some advice.......

I'm a bit bored with my job, not sure how much longer I can last it out.

Over the past few months my love for photography has increased exponentially.

A few years ago, after a few years of Ski racing I trained as a ski instructor, since then, due to a lack of funds and a want to stay with the missus, i haven't really used the qualification much.

Skiing and Photography are my main loves in life, and I'm thinking of combining the two.

I would want to take photos of pros, and people skiing big mountain runs. Are there any ski togs on this forum? How did people get into it. What kit are people using, both Camera kit and skis???

All help is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks ;)

I read an article about a ski photographer a while ago, I think basically you have to live in the mountains first off, secondly have gear that can tolerate harsh conditions - both photographic and clothing. Its not desperately hard if you're prepared is essentially what I'm getting at. I'm sure its easier getting your shots out there if you know a few good skiers too who don't mind doing the skiing for you to capture etc. the other route is notifying the ski schools and hitting the slopes to capture all the kids on holiday for parents to have shots of their kids learning to ski...i'd guess being a qualified ski instructor might be to your advantage in this. this route might also ensure money always coming in for you to pursue your other interests higher up the mountain...
just a thought...

where abouts might you have a crack at this venture?

Hi,

Clothing and ski kit isn't too much of a problem, I've spent a lot of time in the mountains, just wondered if ski togs prefer touring skis or alpine skis.

Camera wise, I'd need to branch out, currently I'm using a 30D saving for a 5D, but if i were to become very serious, then I'd try and get a 1DS, maybe the 5D would suffice though???? Lenses, again I'm building my collection, trying a lot using lensesforhire.co.uk (brilliant set up).

I could supplement my income by teaching the odd lesson, I'm also a webdesigner so may bring a bit in that way.

I have been looking at attending the Nissan Freeride world tour in Tignes, and maybe starting that way. I also have a friend that will be at Vancouver 2010 winter olympics, I don't know if athletes have their own togs (does anyone know??) but that could be a lead as well.

Where would I start?????? Dunno, i have lots of ski instructor mates all over the world, i would probably start in Europe. Maybe travel/live light and move around a lot???

I don't know, it would be a perfect dream, life's short, and you need to do the things you love!

don't expect to earn much money, I can barely cover my equipment costs. Ski/snowboard mags typically pay between £80 for a full page going up to £250 for a cover. Given how much competition there is in the industry, you'll have to be shooting almost every day with the best skiers out there to make a living.

check out http://www.grantgunderson.com/ for some ideas of what it takes to be one of the worlds best.

Whoa! Some amazing shots at that link.
But I doubt you'd need to match that if you were following the competition tour(s?).
I wonder who would buy the photo's though? I can't say I've seen any skiing photo's in newspapers since Eddie the Eagle, would the ski manufacturers have staff togs?

Seeing Gunderson's photos really makes me sad. Those are amazing photos, and what looks to be an amazing way of life. I suppose if people have the drive and the sheer determination to make a living, then they deserve every bit of it. I think I'm just jealous that I'm not that good, despite the fact I haven't practised :P

There was an article in Professional Photographer during the course of the year which went into this very same thing. I can't put my hands on it at the moment but a quick google might help you locate a back issue.
